Intern, Environmental Compliance

Aquarion Water Authority (AWA) is a locally governed, not-for-profit water authority providing water service to more than 735,000 people in 60 municipalities across Connecticut. Based in Bridgeport, Connecticut, AWA is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and long-term stewardship of one of the state's largest water systems.

About the role

This intern position is in Aquarion's Watershed and Environmental Management Department and reports out of the Aspetuck Environmental Center at 714 Black Rock Road, Easton, Connecticut. The role is for the remainder of the 2026 calendar year and availability through the fall semester is strongly preferred. The Environmental Compliance Intern can work up to 29 hours each week between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (Monday through Friday). The flexible schedule is well suited to upperclassmen undergraduate or graduate students.

Responsibilities

The Environmental Compliance Intern will be trained in sample collection, inspection, and data entry activities to support both the Source Protection and Environmental Compliance programs. The intern will also have the opportunity to learn about and assist the department with natural resource, land management, forestry, and outdoor recreation programs.

• Source Protection inspections
• Environmental compliance inspections
• Watershed sample collection
• Wastewater sample collection from drinking water treatment facilities
• Data entry using MS Office Suite, ArcGIS, Klir, etc.
• Compiling data for annual compliance filings
• Forestry inventory and boundary marking
• Compilation of Sustainability metrics

Requirements

Preferred candidates are seeking or recently received degrees in Forestry, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Engineering or a related field and can work at least 20 hours most weeks.

• Hold and maintain a valid State of Connecticut driver's license
• Able to lift coolers of water samples in and out of a vehicle
• Able to walk in wooded areas and on uneven terrain

The selected candidate will be provided with training to properly conduct these tasks independently.

Qualifications

Ideal candidate is an upperclassman undergraduate or graduate student in a related field.

Pay

This is a part-time, non-benefit eligible position with an hourly rate of $18.50/hour.

Schedule

Up to 29 hours per week between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
