About the role
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 3 or R&D Engineer 4 level, depending upon the skills of the candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Responsibilities
- Understand the hydrodynamic process, stakeholder interests and relationships between physics, engineering and experiment execution.
- Understand how all processes and activities influence the quality of data from hydrodynamic experiments.
- Implement systems engineering principles, to include a graded approach for experiment rigor, to improve the cadence of IWE execution throughout all phases of the experiment lifecycle.
- Cook up coordination with physics, engineering, manufacturing, quality, experimental teams, and Sub-Critical Experiments (SCEs) to develop, manage, and standardize IWE requirements and constraints.
- Work with existing stakeholders to select, develop, and implement digital tools to streamline system engineering processes enabling improvements and collaboration across the IWE portfolio while ensuring data quality.
- Collaborate across organizations to define interfaces in process or engineering. Develop process or technical solutions that constrain these interfaces for consistent results.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience performing systems engineering on experiments or large systems, where the technical and process aspects are both complex.
- Experience interacting effectively with all levels of personnel; building trust, gaining consensus, and resolving conflicts.
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
Qualifications for R&D Engineer 4
- Extensive experience developing, implementing, and leading systems engineering for complex experiments or large systems.
- Successfully demonstrated experience developing and mentoring staff.
Education/Experience for R&D Engineer 3
- Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
- At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Education/Experience for R&D Engineer 4
- Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
- At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of laboratory policies, and processes for weapons engineering and R&D work.
- Demonstrated experience in design, fabrication, and assembly of hydros and/or focused experiments.
- INCOSE Associate Systems Engineering Professional certification or equivalent.
- Familiarity with LANL firing sites, their diagnostics capabilities, and site limitations.
- Experience using digital Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) tools, Requirements Management Software (RMS), or equivalent for systems engineering development and management such as Cameo or Doors.
What You Need
