Fairview's University of Minnesota West Bank Hospital has an immediate opening for an Instrument Technician supporting the OR for upcoming and emergency surgery cases.
About the role
- 1.0 FTE (80 hours every 2 weeks), benefits-eligible position on third shift: 10:45 PM – 07:15 AM, Monday – Friday, weekends as needed
- Provide surgical instruments and supplies needed for procedures
- Decontaminate, clean, process, assemble, sterilize, store, and distribute reusable instruments and medical devices
- Serve as a resource to physicians, nurses, and medical staff regarding instruments and supplies
Responsibilities
- Review and interpret all resources to determine the priority of instruments and medical devices required
- Inspect, test, assemble, package, and label surgical instruments in preparation for sterilization
- Ensure instruments are available and ready for site-specific and System CSSD-CPC trays
- Perform manual decontamination of reusable instruments and equipment
- Follow manufacturers' written instructions for use and system policies and procedures
- Operate automated and non-automated processing equipment such as instrument washers, sterilizers, biological incubators, heat sealers, and other commonly used equipment in sterile processing
- Demonstrate ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of the population served
- Sites may perform surgical case cart assembly, intraoperative supply picking, and high-level disinfection of flexible endoscopes and other semi-critical devices
Requirements
- 6 months experience in an operating room, medical device reprocessing role, or related role OR completion of an approved Fairview Sterile Processing training program
- Preferred: Graduate of a Central Service program, Accredited Surgical Technologist program, or Licensed Practical Nurse program
- Two years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician, a Surgical Technologist, or in a medical device reprocessing role
- Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification
Skills
- Strong situational prioritization skills – knowing which trays must be turned over first based on case urgency, specialty needs, and OR workflow
- Technical troubleshooting – identifying issues with washers, sterilizers, power equipment, or instrument functions
- Cross-department communication – effectively coordinating with OR charge nurses, materials management
- Process improvement mindset – spotting inefficiencies, reducing tray errors
- Endoscope reprocessing experience – high-level disinfection and IFU adherence
- Experience with complex instrument trays – Robotics (Da Vinci), neuro, micro-instruments (eyes), dental
