Job Summary

An Instrumentation Technician Journeyman installs, calibrates, maintains, repairs, and replaces a wide variety of monitoring and control instruments as well as directing and training instrumentation helpers to do the same.

About the Role

Overview of Primary Duties
Install, test, and evaluate instrument or analytical performance as compared to plant specifications, repair malfunctioning equipment, and return it to within tolerance conditions.
Record key measurements to facilitate analysis of failures and development of improvement initiatives.
Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on instrument and analyzer systems.
Use troubleshooting tools and resources, including schematic drawings, logic diagrams, loop drawings, and PLC program printouts to recommend/execute corrective actions on complex operational/instrument/analytical problems.
Identify appropriate spare parts for equipment.
Troubleshoot operational problems with flow, level, pressure, and temperature instrumentation, systems controlled by programmable logic controllers, and systems controlled by distributive control systems.
Ability to Read and interpret drawings which include P&IDs, loop, schematics, logic diagrams, wiring diagrams, PLC program printouts, electrical schematics, and panel schedules.
Knowledge and experience with Test Equipment including Industrial multimeters, multifunction process calibrators for temperature, pressure, flow, frequency, and resistance, 4-20ma loop calibrators/clamp meters, high-pressure calibrators up to 5,000psi, load cell calibrators, and Hart communicator.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret instructions and document, plan, and perform work activities independently
  • Read at a level to understand written safety procedures, work procedures, blueprints, P&IDs, work permits, and technical instruction manuals
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical codes and familiarity with AC voltage (120-480) three-phase and single-phase plus 24 VDC
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and dexterity in the use of tools and equipment
  • The ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, such as, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions
  • Basic computer skills such as opening, creating, and updating content in MS Word documents and Excel spreadsheets
  • Wearing, inspecting, and caring for required personal protective equipment
  • Advising fellow employees of hazardous situations
  • Participating in workplace inspections
  • Complying with statutory requirements, including duty of care
  • Participating in required and assigned training
  • Providing suggestions to improve Safety

Qualifications

  • Formal education/degree/certificate in construction, technical, or trade school such as NCCER+ Certification
  • Journeyman electrical designation is highly preferred
  • Technician requires a Minimum of four (4) + years with Electrical, Instrumentation experience
  • NCCER + Instrument Technician Certification

Physical Demands/Essential Job Functions

  • All weather conditions at varying temperatures
  • Work at varying elevations
  • Work in windy and dusty environments
  • Moderate to high noise levels
  • The project site will contain light to heavy equipment vehicles, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment, and tools
  • Ability to hear bells, whistles, and alarms
  • Required to wear safety-approved body harnesses when working at 4’ or above
  • Required to adhere to large amounts of standing, walking, bending, squatting, climbing, and lifting
  • To use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, and pull objects, materials, controls, and tools
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and move heavy objects up to 25 lbs
  • To use vision abilities to focus, see short and long distances, colors, depth perception, and peripheral vision
