About the Role

The instrument apprentice assists and supports journeyman instrument fitters and technicians in installing, repairing, maintaining, inspecting, and calibrating instruments used to measure and control variables such as pressure, flow, temperature, motion, force, and chemical composition, using precision instruments and hand tools.

Responsibilities

  • Carries tools and materials, cleans parts, and work areas
  • Drills holes in masonry or structural steel for installation of instruments, using electric and pneumatic tools
  • Cuts, bends, and installs tubing related to instrumentation
  • Removes, dismantles, and assembles instruments using hand tools
  • Measures, reads blueprints, and uses square, measuring tape, and ruler
  • Ensures compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting the company’s safety culture
  • Performs other duties as requested, directed, or assigned

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • At least 1 year of experience as an instrument apprentice

Skills

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in construction
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment when handling day-to-day information
  • Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities
  • Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results-oriented
  • Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines
  • Ability to work non-routine hours when necessary
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
  • Ability to operate job-related tools
  • Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, legs, wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carrying at least 30 pounds, and up to 150 pounds with help
