INSTRUCTOR I (PIANIST) (AT-WILL)

About the role

The City of Torrance is recruiting for Instructor I positions to join their Cultural Services team. These positions report directly to a full-time Cultural Services professional and differ from Instructor II positions based on position requirements and tenure.

Responsibilities

• Sets up audiovisual equipment for instructional purposes
• Evaluates student level of ability to develop appropriate lesson plans and modify instruction based on student need
• Evaluates progress of student/class
• Prepares lesson plans and organizes, instructs, and directs classes in a specialized discipline or topic
• Prepares course materials and instructional aids
• Conducts demonstrations/presentations to students
• Prepares activity and other reports
• May on occasion provide direction to assistants

Qualifications

• Five years of experience teaching the equivalent of four semester courses per year
• Four years of the required experience may be substituted by possession of a relevant degree from a college, university, or specialized school
• Significant recognized ranking in the field may be substituted for four years of the required experience
• No specific minimum of education
• Knowledge of latest state-of-the-art of specialized subject area
• Techiques of instruction
• Basic First Aid
• Ability to develop lesson plans independently
• Follow written and oral instructions
• Write required reports
• Implement department's philosophy of recreation
• Learn, monitor, and enforce departmental policies and procedures including health and safety rules
• Evaluate class activities to assess class/program effectiveness
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other personnel
• Demonstrate expertise as required in specialty area

Pay

This is a recurrent, part-time, non-civil service, as needed position. Hours are flexible but concentrated around advertised classes. This position may be expected to work some evenings and weekends.
