INSTRUCTOR I (PIANIST) (AT-WILL)
About the role
The City of Torrance is recruiting for Instructor I positions to join their Cultural Services team. These positions report directly to a full-time Cultural Services professional and differ from Instructor II positions based on position requirements and tenure.
Responsibilities
- Sets up audiovisual equipment for instructional purposes
- Evaluates student level of ability to develop appropriate lesson plans and modify instruction based on student need
- Evaluates progress of student/class
- Prepares lesson plans and organizes, instructs, and directs classes in a specialized discipline or topic
- Prepares course materials and instructional aids
- Conducts demonstrations/presentations to students
- Prepares activity and other reports
- May on occasion provide direction to assistants
Qualifications
- Five years of experience teaching the equivalent of four semester courses per year
- Four years of the required experience may be substituted by possession of a relevant degree from a college, university, or specialized school
- Significant recognized ranking in the field may be substituted for four years of the required experience
- No specific minimum of education
- Knowledge of latest state-of-the-art of specialized subject area
- Techiques of instruction
- Basic First Aid
- Ability to develop lesson plans independently
- Follow written and oral instructions
- Write required reports
- Implement department's philosophy of recreation
- Learn, monitor, and enforce departmental policies and procedures including health and safety rules
- Evaluate class activities to assess class/program effectiveness
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other personnel
- Demonstrate expertise as required in specialty area

Pay
This is a recurrent, part-time, non-civil service, as needed position. Hours are flexible but concentrated around advertised classes. This position may be expected to work some evenings and weekends.
