About the role

The Department of French & Italian at the University of Kansas seeks individuals qualified to teach part-time undergraduate courses in French. This is an instructional, adjunct faculty position for the Fall 2026 semester, not eligible for tenure or promotion in rank. Renewal is contingent upon unit needs, funding, and performance, not to exceed two continuous semesters. The position is subject to a collective bargaining agreement and is open to candidates eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start date.

Responsibilities

• Teach one to four 3-hour or 5-hour courses at the 100-, 200-, 300-, or 400-level.
• Prepare for and attend all class meetings; arrange for a substitute in case of absence (classes should not be canceled).
• For asynchronous online courses, engage students via posted videos, video-chat sessions, and frequent email updates.
• Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback, and assign grades.
• Conduct assessments of student learning and comply with department requests for course data on assessment practices and learning outcomes.
• Hold a minimum of three posted office hours per week, divided over at least two (preferably three) different days, and be available for reasonable appointments outside scheduled hours.
• Adhere to departmental, college, and university policies.

Requirements

Evaluation of qualifications will be based on application materials, resume, professional references, and course evaluations (if available).

• For teaching any undergraduate courses:
  • M.A., ABD, or Ph.D. in French or a related arts or humanities discipline.
  • Near-native or native command of French.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching (evidenced in evaluations or letters of recommendation).
• For teaching foreign language acquisition only:
  • Bachelor of Arts degree in any discipline with at least ten years of French language proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience teaching the course(s) of interest.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching (evidenced in evaluations or letters of recommendation).
• Experience teaching in hybrid or online formats.
• Training in second language acquisition and/or language pedagogy.
