About the Role
Teaches assigned day and evening courses in college-transfer communication courses, with a primary responsibility for teaching communication courses in area high schools. Uses technology to enhance instruction and engages students in the learning process. Reports to the English and Humanities Department Chair.
Responsibilities
- Teaches assigned college transfer courses.
- Performs related administrative and recordkeeping duties, including:
- Assisting with editing/revising the Library instruction textbook.
- Evaluating departmental textbooks.
- Preparing lesson plans, course syllabi, handouts, tests, and other instructional materials.
- Gathering resources for class, duplicating materials, and making transparencies.
- Conducting class and critiques of students' work.
- Grading assignments and maintaining files.
- Prepares and completes various reports and forms related to classes, including attendance reports, grade reports, and rolls.
- Performs student-related duties, including:
- Advising students and assisting with class registration.
- Counseling students on academic and career matters.
- Providing help with job placement and contacts.
- Writing letters of recommendation.
- Completes various student forms such as withdrawals, registration, drop/add, and credit by examination.
- Remains active in professional organizations and keeps abreast of new research and technological advances in communication education through professional journals, seminars, conferences, and meetings.
- Receives, reviews, processes, files, and submits a variety of documents and reports, including attendance reports, grade sheets, evaluation forms, and professional development forms.
- Operates and maintains equipment and supplies, including computers, calculators, copiers, audio-visual equipment, and general office supplies.
- Maintains good working relationships and communicates information within the Department and across campus.
- Serves on various College committees and organizations and attends meetings as required.
- Assists part-time instructors and substitutes for absent instructors as needed.
- Responds to phone calls, providing information and answering inquiries.
- Performs other duties as required.
Requirements
- Master's degree in Communication or a master's degree in a related field with eighteen (18) graduate hours in Communication.
- Two years of teaching experience at the high school level; one year of teaching experience at the college level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Preference given to applicants with community college teaching experience and online teaching experience.
