About the role
The Director of the Schaffer Library of Health Sciences collaborates with faculty, students, researchers, clinicians, and other constituencies of the academic medical center to understand information needs and ensure the library effectively supports all the missions – education, research, clinical practice, and community service – of the Albany Med Health System.
Responsibilities
- Oversees all aspects of library operations, including staffing, services, technologies, strategic planning and policy.
- Supervises library staff. Oversees hiring, training, and performance management.
- Prepares and monitors budgets for multiple library and audiovisual cost centers.
- Works with System leadership to assure fiscal compliance and strategic alliance.
- Oversees collection development including physical and digital resources, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of the institution.
- Promotes collaboration with appropriate stakeholders to oversee library facilities and space planning.
- Provides leadership in developing and delivering high-quality library services, including reference, instruction, and research support.
- Integrates information skills into the system academic and clinical environments.
- Stays informed about emerging information, education and instructional technologies and trends in academic health sciences libraries; incorporates them into library services and operations.
- Develops and implements the library's operational and strategic plan, aligning it with the institution's overall goals.
- Participates in library fund-raising activities and explores grant opportunities to support library initiatives.
- Works closely with the Information Services Department to ensure access to, and effective use of, information resources and tools.
- Plans for technology infrastructure, implementation and upgrades, ensuring compatibility and compliance.
- Regularly assesses the library's effectiveness in meeting the needs of the institution, using data to inform decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Leads initiatives that support scholarly publishing and open science access across academic, research, and clinical enterprises.
- Supports team building and active learning among library staff.
- Library Liaison Acts as chief representative and spokesperson for the library – negotiates and advocates for the library.
- Develops system-wide visibility for the library to increase utilization of library resources, services and program development.
- Chairs the College Information Technology Advisory Committee.
- Supports the LCME and MSCHE accreditation processes.
- Supports the educational offerings of the library, including library faculty who are actively engaged in the educational mission through course directorships, teaching, and scholarship.
- Engages in strategic planning for integration of library services into health system initiatives, such as informatics, patient education, clinical decision support, and community-based research.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Library Science or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in academic health sciences libraries.
- Proven ability to lead and manage a team.
- Experience with budget preparation and management.
- Strong understanding of information technology and its applications in academic health sciences libraries.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of health sciences and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
