Position Summary

The Instructional Lead serves as an instructional leader, driving academic excellence through the implementation of the Cedar Rapids Community School District (CRCSD) Model of Instruction. The Instructional Lead will work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and staff to ensure that all students are equipped, empowered, and engaged, as defined by the Portrait of a Graduate. This role will involve leading curriculum development, guiding instructional practices, and providing ongoing professional learning and coaching to teachers to enhance their instructional practices and strategies. The Instructional Lead will also play a key role in developing and sustaining CRCSD's college and career pathways model and supporting the small learning community model within the school.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instructional Leadership - Serves as an instructional leader, setting a clear and compelling vision for teaching and learning aligned with the CRCSD Model of Instruction. Leads the planning, implementation, and monitoring of instructional practices and strategies, aligning with district expectations in order to meet the needs of all students.

  • Work with school leadership to create a culture of continuous improvement focused on student achievement and equity.

  • Teacher Coaching and Support - Coach teachers on the implementation of the CRCSD Model of Instruction, providing individualized support to help improve instructional practices and outcomes. Conduct regular classroom observations, provide timely and constructive feedback, and support teachers in refining their teaching practices and strategies aligned to the Iowa Teaching Standards in a non-evaluative, confidential manner. Facilitate collaborative professional learning communities (PLCs) to foster peer support and collective problem-solving around instructional practices.

  • Professional Development Plan, deliver, and coordinate targeted professional development sessions focused on the CRCSD Model of Instruction and curriculum. Support teachers to develop a deep understanding of instructional practices and strategies, curriculum standards, and student-centered teaching practices. Tailor professional development to meet the needs of teachers at various levels of experience and expertise.

  • Student Achievement and Engagement - Advocate that all students, regardless of background or ability, are provided with opportunities to be equipped, empowered, and engaged, as outlined by the Portrait of a Graduate. Collaborate with other school leaders to design and implement school-wide initiatives aimed at improving student engagement, achievement, and well-being. Use student achievement data to drive instructional decisions, identify gaps in student learning, and target interventions.

  • Pathways and Small Learning Communities - Develop a deep understanding of CRCSD's college and career pathways model and support its effective integration into the school's academic programs. Implement the small learning community model with fidelity, working to create a more personalized, student-centered learning environment. Foster relationships with community organizations, postsecondary institutions, and employers to enhance career readiness and pathway opportunities for students.

  • Collaboration and Communication - Work closely with the principal, assistant principal(s), and other school leaders to align instructional priorities with the school's overall goals and mission. Serve as a liaison between the school and the district office to ensure effective communication and the smooth implementation of district-wide initiatives. Engage with parents, students, and the broader school community to communicate instructional goals and foster a shared commitment to student success.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in education, educational leadership, or a related field.

  • Experience: At least 5 years of successful classroom teaching experience. Experience in an instructional leadership role (e.g., department chair, building or district coach, or administration) is preferred.

  • Certification: Iowa teaching certification required.

  • Skills: Strong understanding of instructional strategies and the CRCSD Model of Instruction. Demonstrated ability to lead and coach teachers in improving instructional practices. Knowledge of curriculum design, assessment practices, and student engagement strategies. Familiarity with the college and career pathways model and the small learning community structure. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to analyze data to drive decision-making and support continuous improvement.
