About the role
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Chicago supports instruction through effective management of the Undergraduate Teaching Laboratories. The Instructional Lab Manager works closely with the instructional faculty to understand specific requirements and set up for each course, prepares chemicals for experiments, manages inventory, and ensures compliance with safety regulations.
Responsibilities
- Works proactively with instructional faculty to understand and set up course requirements.
- Prepares reagent solutions and other materials for experiments.
- Supervises and integrates with laboratory technicians in the cleaning and stocking of teaching labs.
- Maintains chemical inventory and orders supplies.
- Ensures compliance with OSHA regulations regarding chemical storage, labeling, and handling.
- Removes chemical waste from labs daily.
- Serves as the primary safety contact for the Kent instructional laboratories.
- Monitors and implements improvements for teaching laboratories.
- Communicates with faculty, technicians, and staff to resolve problems collaboratively.
- Supports lecture demonstration needs and instructs students on equipment operation.
Requirements
- Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in a related field.
- Knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related field.
- Background in a research laboratory.
- Relevant experience handling and managing chemicals.
- Experience managing chemical inventory and purchasing.
