About the role
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), a Catholic liberal arts institution founded by the Sisters of Providence, seeks a collaborative and innovative Instructional Designer to support the development of high-quality, engaging, and inclusive learning experiences across all modalities—online, hybrid, and face-to-face.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with faculty to design, develop, and revise courses that align with institutional learning outcomes, accessibility standards, and best practices in teaching and learning.
- Support the effective use of the College’s Learning Management System (Canvas) and other instructional technologies.
- Provide training, consultation, and resources to faculty in areas such as course design, assessment, online pedagogy, and digital tools.
- Develop and maintain templates, guides, and multimedia resources that promote consistency and quality in course delivery.
- Partner with the Center for Teaching and Learning, Academic Affairs, and Information Technology to advance initiatives in teaching excellence and innovation.
- Ensure all course materials meet accessibility and copyright compliance standards.
- Support evaluation and continuous improvement of online and hybrid programs through data collection, analysis, and faculty feedback.
- Stay current on trends and research in instructional design, learning science, educational technology, and higher education pedagogy.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support academic quality and student success.

Working Conditions
This position is full-time and may allow for limited remote or hybrid work, depending on institutional needs. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required for faculty training or special projects.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience designing and developing online and hybrid courses in a higher education setting.
- Proficiency with learning management systems (preferably Canvas), multimedia tools, and accessibility standards (e.g., ADA, Section 508, WCAG).
- Strong understanding of instructional design models such Quality Matters, or Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and project management skills.
Preferred
- Experience teaching in higher education.
- Familiarity with Catholic and liberal arts educational traditions.
- Experience developing faculty training or professional development programs.
- Knowledge of assessment design, data-informed improvement, and emerging educational technologies.
