Instructional Designer
About the role
We are seeking a talented and innovative Instructional Designer to join the Test & Evaluation Training team. In this role, you will be responsible for creating compelling and effective visual content that supports the delivery of training materials and enhances learning experiences for diverse audiences. You will collaborate with instructional designers, trainers, subject matter experts (SMEs), and other stakeholders to develop engaging training content in a variety of formats.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with SMEs, engineers, product teams, operators, maintainers, and pilots to identify training requirements and define clear learning outcomes.
- Conduct needs assessments to identify skill gaps and align training programs with business objectives.
- Design and develop curriculum frameworks, course outlines, evaluation, and instructional materials using the ADDIE and Kirkpatrick models, and other instructional design methodologies.
- Translate complex, technical information into engaging and digestible learning experiences for diverse audiences.
- Create content for blended learning formats including instructor-led training (ILT), e-learning modules, job aids, and hands-on practicals in support of both Train-the-Trainer and direct-to-customer deliverables.
- Incorporate adult learning theory and industry best practices to drive knowledge retention, engagement, and performance outcomes.
- Partner with content creators, trainers, and other Training Team members to ensure programs are effectively delivered and assessed.
- Maintain version control, documentation standards, and compliance with internal training systems and platforms.
- Aid in the refinement of learner-facing training materials, including Microsoft Powerpoint, Adobe InDesign, Figma, and other presentation platforms.
- Aid in creating templates and visual standards to ensure consistency across all training products.
- Travel to test sites to observe, capture content, and validate that materials match reality.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Instructional Design Systems, Multimedia Design, or a related field.
- 3+ years of professional instructional design experience, with a strong portfolio showcasing a variety of design styles and projects.
- Demonstrated expertise in applying instructional design models (ADDIE, SAM, Kirkpatrick) and adult learning principles to create effective training programs.
- Proficiency with e-learning authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Rise, Adobe Captivate, or similar platforms) and experience creating SCORM or xAPI-compliant content.
- Experience conducting needs assessments, learning objectives development, and course evaluation strategies.
- Strong ability to translate complex technical information into clear, engaging learning experiences for diverse audiences.
- Proficiency with content creation and editing tools such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and collaborative platforms like Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with SMEs, trainers, and cross-functional teams.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and quality standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the defense, aerospace, or highly regulated technical industry, with an understanding of complex technical products and training requirements.
- Knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Learning Experience Platforms (LXP), including content integration and reporting.
- Experience with video editing or multimedia production tools (e.g., Camtasia, Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects) to support blended learning solutions.
- Familiarity with Air Force or other U.S. military training programs, including their standards and operational constraints.
