About the role

The Special Education Instructional Coordinator works with individual and/or small groups of students under the supervision of a certificated teacher. This role involves assisting students by modeling necessary skills, following educational and behavioral plans, and supporting a safe, positive learning environment across various settings including classrooms, lunchrooms, and outdoor areas.

Responsibilities

• Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, assemblies, field trips) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
• Documents student’s daily activities (e.g., behavior, completed assignments, on/off task times) for daily logs and quarterly behavior sheets submitted to stakeholders.
• Provides instruction to students in individual and group activities (e.g., reading, math, social/emotional learning) under the supervision of an assigned teacher to implement remediation goals.
• Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the classroom teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
• Communicates with teachers and school personnel to assist in evaluating progress and implementing IEP objectives.
• Implements instructional programs and lesson plans (e.g., reading, math, language comprehension, writing) under the supervision of an assigned teacher to reinforce learning concepts.
• Maintains classroom equipment and work areas to ensure a safe learning environment and meet mandated requirements.
• Promotes good study habits and student independence to improve the quality of student outcomes.
• Implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or special conditions.
• Models conversation, manners, clean-up activities, listening, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
• Monitors student’s daily schedule and behavior plan (e.g., class schedule, breaks, medication, appetite) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
• Responds to emergency situations (e.g., injured students, fights) using trauma-informed care and Ukeru behavior management strategies, or directs to appropriate personnel for resolution.
• Administers tests, homework assignments, and make-up work to support teachers in the classroom.
• Attends meetings and in-service presentations to acquire and convey information relative to job functions.
• Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient functioning of the work unit.
• Participates in physical activities that are part of the students’ basic program.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or Psychology.
• Demonstrates understanding of students’ disabilities; maintains a firm yet courteous and fair approach.
• Demonstrates flexibility in schedule and activities throughout the day.
• Demonstrates cooperation, openness for growth, and willingness to contribute in a team approach.
• Communicates, collaborates, and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, and students.
• Maintains confidentiality regarding all aspects of work with special education children and staff.
• Ability to operate a computer and related software such as Google Apps (Docs, Sheets, Slides) and overall comfort with using technology.

Skills

• Ability to model appropriate behaviors and interactions with students and staff.
• Experience following educational and specific behavioral plans.

Physical Requirements

• Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer and other office equipment, and reach with hands and arms.
• Must occasionally lift, move, and/or support up to 50 pounds (and/or up to adult-size body weight with a two-to-three-person lift).
• Position may require physical interaction with students who have difficulty controlling physical behavior.

Pay

Starting salary of $40,000+ based on qualifications and relevant experience.

Schedule

• Monday–Friday, 10-month position with the opportunity to add five weeks to support an extended school year program.
