About the role

The San Francisco Community College District Police Department seeks to recruit full-time Institutional Police Officers to provide protection of life and property, enforce state and local laws, and uphold college policies.

Responsibilities

• Administers first aid to students, staff and/or visitors for immediate emergency medical care.
• Ars arrest individuals engaging in illegal activities for apprehending suspects.
• Collaborates with community agencies for addressing individual cases and investigations.
• Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors.
• Enforces applicable laws and college policies.
• Escorts students, assigned personnel and/or visitors for safety and site security.
• Implements safety escorts for safe movement on campus.
• Investigates potential campus crimes and/or student related community incidents.
• Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc.
• Patrols college facilities for providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring criminal activities.
• Prepares a variety of documents for documenting activities, providing written reference, and conveying information.
• Presents information in a variety of settings for informing individuals of public safety, law enforcement procedures, and individual rights.
• Provides traffic and parking control for maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lots.
• Reports safety issues or concerns for maintaining a safe environment, free of hazards.
• Responds to a variety of situations for making appropriate responses and taking actions to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
• Responds calls for services from a variety of sources regarding campus security issues.
• Testifies in court proceedings for providing information regarding alleged illegal activity.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination).
• One (1) year of experience as a police officer, member of a military police unit or other work involving the safeguarding of life and property.
• Valid California Driver License.
• Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate issued by California Department of Justice, Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training.

Qualifications

• Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
• Experience: One (1) year of experience as a police officer, member of a military police unit or other work involving the safeguarding of life and property.
• Licenses and Certifications: Valid California Driver License; Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate.

Skills

• Satisfactory hearing capabilities and visual acuity of at least 20/100 correctable to at least 20/30 in each eye.
• Ability to maintain physical condition necessary for walking, standing, running or sitting for prolonged periods of time; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; possible exposure to physical injury and other dangers inherent in police work.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Reliable, responsible, dependable, and a good team player.
• Effective interpersonal skills enabling the officer to effectively deal with a diverse population of students, staff and the general public.

• Effective experience in conflict resolution in person, virtually, email and/or by phone.

• Understanding of regulations related to handling of confidential student information.

Benefits

This position is classified as a Temporary Provisional (TPV) position excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process. It is considered "at will" and shall serve at the discretion of the Department Head. This position will be subject to the Permanent Civil Service Examination process at a later date. Successful participation in the Permanent Civil Service Examination and selection through an open competitive process is needed in order to be considered for the permanent appointment.

Pay

$49.4064- $59.8015 hourly $102,765 - $124,387 annually

Schedule

Flexible shifts, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Shifts are 5 days/8 hours per day or 4 days/10 hours per day: 7 days a week. Shifts are determined by the department policy and/or at the discretion of the Chief of Police. The department currently operates two shifts: Day shift and swing shift.
