Inpatient Psychiatric NP
About the Role
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP) works in collaboration with an interdisciplinary health care team—including attending psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers—within the Upstate Community Hospital inpatient psychiatric unit. The role follows a team-based approach to care, focusing on the initial evaluation, diagnosis, and ongoing treatment plan of acute psychiatric patients. The NP determines appropriateness for discharge and facilitates transitions to the appropriate level of care.
The NP must have strong communication skills and coordinate effectively with teams across the hospital, including admissions, the inpatient unit, and other parts of the Upstate University Hospital system.
Responsibilities
- Conduct complete psychiatric assessments and mental status examinations.
- Determine diagnostic impressions in accordance with the DSM 5 and provide psychiatric treatment, including prescribing and administering medications.
- Perform comprehensive history and examinations, and compile patient medical data, including behavioral health history.
- Make referrals to outside care/facilities or order diagnostic/laboratory tests as needed; collect, interpret, and document test results.
- Participate in treatment teams, develop and implement patient treatment care plans, record progress notes, and assist in continuity of care.
- Instruct and counsel patients on compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens, emotional challenges of daily living, health maintenance, and addiction treatment.
- Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to provide psychiatric care and manage psychiatric issues.
Requirements
- NYS license as a Registered Nurse Practitioner (NP).
- ANCC certification in Psychiatric Nursing.
- Current CPR certification.
Two years of previous psychiatry experience is preferred.
Schedule
Full-time position with rotating evening and weekend coverage.
