About the Role
This position is responsible for reviewing clinical documentation in inpatient medical records to accurately assign and sequence ICD-9 diagnostic and ICD-9 procedure codes for complex cases, ensuring proper reimbursement and data collection.
Responsibilities
- Code complex inpatient cases using ICD-9 and/or ICD-10 code sets, including trauma, transplant, neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery, burn unit, and other assigned medical records.
- Ensure accurate MS-DRG or APR-DRG assignment for appropriate reimbursement.
- Code all accounts within 4 days of patient discharge, meeting productivity standards per AHIMA Guidelines.
- Verify patient information to identify discrepancies and ensure codes are applied to the correct patient encounter.
- Act as a quality reviewer to identify misfiled documents or discrepancies in patient records.
- Apply appropriate modifiers to reflect care rendered accurately.
- Query physicians for additional information when documentation is unclear, following Coding Guidelines and Coding Clinics.
- Ensure codes reflect care rendered to support patient safety, accurate data retrieval, and proper reimbursement.
- Report unusual circumstances or risk factors to the Coding Associate Administrator or Coding Director.
- Maintain continuing education requirements per AHIMA and/or AAPC to uphold certification and competency.
- Participate in ICD-10-CM-PCS education sessions provided by Jackson Health System or approved external entities.
- Adhere to Standards of Excellence, respecting patient rights, privacy, and confidentiality per HIPAA and applicable laws.

- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- 3 to 5 years of related experience.
- High school diploma required.
- HIM/Coding Credential and/or Certification by AHIMA or AAPC (required for employees hired after June 2015).
