Information Technology Specialist V (Network Branch) - Honolulu
About the Role
This position performs highly complex information technology work, including analysis, design, planning, specification, build, conversion, implementation, documentation, and procurement of network systems and infrastructure. The role exercises significant independent judgment under minimal supervision, prioritizes and responds to support requests, and resolves emergency issues to minimize service disruptions.
Responsibilities
- Configure, tune, and troubleshoot WAN and LAN connections (switches and routers)
- Manage firewalls, load balancers, fabric switches, wireless LAN controllers, access points, and other related devices
- Support network systems for data, voice (e.g., telephone), radio, or video systems
- Work with technologies such as VoIP, network access control systems, copper and fiber cabling, VPN concentrators, Windows and Linux servers, and VMware
Requirements
Education Requirement: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience. Excess experience or administrative, professional, analytical, technical, or other responsible work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. The education or experience must demonstrate the ability to write clear reports, interpret complex material, and solve problems logically.
Specialized Experience Requirement: Three and one-half (3½) years of progressively responsible professional work experience in information technology, including analysis, design, programming, security, database management, consulting, and/or installing/maintaining computer systems, hardware, telecommunications, web, or network infrastructure equipment.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of information technology principles, methods, techniques, and practices
- Understanding of computer hardware, software, and peripheral equipment
- Familiarity with personal computer, server, mini, and/or mainframe operating systems
- Supervisory aptitude or potential for supervisory duties
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in designing or supporting network systems for data, voice, radio, or video systems
- Proficiency with network switching, routing, VoIP, firewalls, fabric switches, load balancers, network access control systems, cabling, VPN concentrators, Windows/Linux servers, and VMware
Substitutions Allowed
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field may substitute for 6 months of specialized experience
- Partial completion of a master's degree in computer science may substitute for up to 1 year of specialized experience
- Master's degree in computer science may substitute for 1½ years of specialized experience
- Ph.D. in computer science may substitute for 2½ years of specialized experience
