Industry Expert Research Scientist, Center for Aerospace Resilient Systems (CARS), Daytona Beach Cam
About the Role
The Center for Aerospace Resilient Systems (CARS) is seeking globally recognized aerospace systems industry technical leadership experts to help strengthen and grow the CARS research portfolio. The focus is on aerospace cybersecurity, AI, Quantum computing, CNS ATM / C5ISR research in civil, defense, and space systems domains. These positions will lead the acquisition and support the execution of high-quality research, contributing to advancing knowledge in enhancing aviation and aerospace resilient systems.
Responsibilities
- Lead and collaborate on research initiatives, potentially serving as Principal Investigator or co-investigator on externally funded grants.
- Capture and lead research proposals that significantly aid in ongoing projects, with a focus on large-dollar-value proposals for Senior Research Scientists.
- Engage with faculty, staff, and students to pursue innovative research projects, particularly those involving PhD, Master's, and undergraduate students.
- Collaborate with industry and government stakeholders to address key aviation and aerospace systems resiliency challenges.
- Contribute to the overall mission of CARS in advancing safe, secure, and resilient aerospace system solutions.
Qualifications
- Expertise in aviation and aerospace systems, particularly in:
- Aviation/aerospace cybersecurity domain knowledge.
- Application of AI/ML and Quantum computing.
- Understanding of cybersecurity risk assessment, vulnerability management, and systems resiliency evaluation.
- Leadership and collaboration skills, including the ability to foster partnerships among industry, government, and academia.
- Proven track record in research and data analysis, with experience in designing and conducting aviation and aerospace systems research.
- Innovation and thought leadership in aviation and aerospace systems.
- Commitment to ethical and professional standards, including integrity and adherence to regulatory/compliance requirements.
- Excellent communication and networking skills.
- Ability to work across disciplines and incorporate insights from engineering, human factors, policy, and other fields.
- Strong analytical skills for data-driven decision-making.
- Continuous improvement mindset and adaptability to emerging trends and technologies.
- Global perspective, considering diverse regulatory environments and cultural factors.
- Proficiency in generating financially viable research proposals and executing projects upon securing contracts.

- Must have or be able to acquire a US security clearance.
Position Levels
Depending on preparation and experience, the position can be set at various levels:
- Research Scientist: Requires a minimum of 20 years of relevant industry experience. A Ph.D. is valuable but not mandatory; leadership and innovation in industry-government/industry technology development and research are most important.
- Senior Research Scientist: Requires a minimum of 30 years of relevant industry experience. A Ph.D. is valuable but not mandatory; leadership and innovation in government/industry technology development and research are most important. Expected to capture and lead large-dollar-value research proposals (greater than $1M/yr).
