About the role

National Interstate, a member of Great American Insurance Group, seeks a Claims Specialist to join their team in Richfield, OH. This hybrid role requires on-site presence four days per week (core days Tuesday–Thursday) with one flexible remote day based on business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a large inventory of complex claims to evaluate compensability/liability.
  • Plan and conduct complex claims investigations to confirm coverage and determine liability, compensability, and damages.
  • Analyze and negotiate appropriate claim settlements/reserves within prescribed authority.
  • Attend arbitrations, mediations, depositions, or trials as needed.
  • Convey complex information regarding coverage and settlements to insureds, claimants, and external partners.
  • Authorize payments in accordance with assigned authority limits and ensure timely processing.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed claim files, including correspondence, reports, and settlement agreements.
  • May supervise staff, participate in talent selection, development, and performance management for direct reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Risk Management and Insurance, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 9 years of experience in property and casualty claims handling.
  • Completion of or progress toward a professional designation (e.g., Associate in Claims) preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of auto physical damage claims, collision repair processes, estimating practices, labor guides, and parts pricing.
  • Proficiency with CCC ONE, Mitchell, Xactimate, Audatex/Solera, or similar estimating platforms.

Qualifications

  • Works within broad limits and authority on highly technical assignments requiring specialized knowledge.
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong knowledge of insurance policies, coverage, and claims handling procedures.
  • Knowledge of industry laws and regulations.
  • Advanced ability to organize and prioritize caseloads for timely resolution.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to build relationships and lead negotiations.
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Viewed as a senior resource within the Claims department and/or organization.

Pay

Salary range: $75,000.00 – $85,000.00
