About the role

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises, providing essential services to those affected by conflict and disaster. The IRC's Immigration Legal Services Department in Silver Spring, Maryland, offers free immigration services to clients, including green card applications, work authorization, naturalization, and family reunification.

Responsibilities

  • Go through client immigration documents and assist with consultation and application sessions.
  • Answer client questions regarding immigration services and refer to appropriate IRC staff members.
  • Provide general administrative support, such as tracking, filing, and mailing documents.
  • Update client information in the Lolly Law database under the supervision of the Immigration Services Manager.
  • Aid clients with document translation, authentication, and completion.
  • Offer special assistance to clients with unique needs.
  • Promote the IRC's immigration department through online and local networks.
  • Research immigration issues, policies, and programs.
  • Build partnerships with local agencies to enhance immigration service delivery.

Qualifications

  • Working towards a college degree in international relief, humanitarian work, or refugee law.
  • Must be a current student or within 12 months of graduating.
  • Passion to work with limited-English speaking refugees, with second-language proficiency a plus, especially Spanish, French, Dari, and Pashto.
  • Interest and/or experience in U.S. Immigration law and outreach.
  • Excellent research, language, database management, and record-keeping skills.

Experience

  • Experience working in outreach to support building partnerships.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn about immigration services available to newcomers.
  • Gain experience in online databases like Lolly Law and application processing.
  • Develop skills in working with limited-English speaking refugees.

Applicants must be able to work in-person at the Silver Spring office and at a minimum of 15 hours per week. Interns are expected to attend an in-person orientation on September 7th, 2026.
