Immigration Attorney

About the Role

The Asiyah Women’s Center is seeking a compassionate, mission-driven Immigration Attorney to provide legal advocacy and immigration support for survivors of domestic violence, housing instability, forced displacement, and other vulnerable circumstances. This role will focus on helping clients navigate complex immigration matters while ensuring services are delivered through a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and survivor-centered lens. The Immigration Attorney will work closely with the social services team, including case workers, social workers, and leadership, to support clients in accessing immigration protections and legal pathways that promote long-term safety and stability. This individual will play a critical role in empowering women and families as they rebuild their lives after trauma.

The ideal candidate is compassionate, detail-oriented, and emotionally intelligent, with experience supporting immigrant populations and survivors. They can balance legal expertise with empathy, advocacy, and collaboration in a fast-paced nonprofit environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct legal consultations and immigration representation to clients experiencing domestic violence, housing instability, trafficking, or related vulnerabilities
• Assess eligibility for immigration relief options, including but not limited to VAWA petitions, U-Visas, T-Visas, asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), adjustment of status, family-based petitions, work authorization, naturalization, and humanitarian relief
• Prepare, file, and manage immigration petitions, supporting evidence, legal motions, and related documentation in a timely manner
• Represent clients in immigration interviews, hearings, court proceedings, and communications with government agencies as appropriate
• Collaborate closely with case workers, social workers, and leadership to develop coordinated support plans that address legal and social service needs
• Educate clients on their legal rights, immigration options, and case expectations in a clear, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed manner
• Maintain accurate case notes, client records, and documentation in compliance with legal, confidentiality, and organizational standards
• Support program outcomes tracking and grant reporting by maintaining case metrics and service data
• Build and maintain relationships with external legal partners, pro bono attorneys, immigration organizations, and referral networks
• Conduct community workshops, trainings, or informational sessions on immigration rights and protections when needed
• Stay informed on immigration law updates, policy changes, and legal developments impacting immigrant survivors and vulnerable populations

Requirements

• J.D. or LLM from an accredited law school
• Active admission and good standing with a state bar (New York preferred)
• Minimum 2 years of immigration law experience, preferably serving immigrant, refugee, or survivor populations
• Experience handling VAWA, U-Visa, asylum, SIJS, family petitions, and humanitarian immigration matters
• Strong understanding of confidentiality, ethics, and trauma-informed legal advocacy
• Demonstrated ability to work with survivors of domestic violence, housing instability, or marginalized communities
• Training or experience in trauma-informed care and domestic violence crisis intervention
• Fluency in English required; proficiency in Arabic, Urdu, Bangla, or other relevant languages strongly preferred
• Proven emotional intelligence; able to build trust, de-escalate tense situations, and foster positive relationships with clients and staff
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
