About the role

An immediate opening for an AFRICOM Regional Expertise & Culture (REC) Instructor at Hurlburt Air Force Base, FL. Preference will be given to Florida-based applicants; however, all qualified candidates willing to accept a short-term assignment are encouraged to apply. Any relocation costs will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

The Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) USAF Special Operations School (USAFSOS) Theater Engagement Department requires language, regional expertise, and culture (LREC) training and education. Training will be conducted at AFSOC’s institution, United States Special Operations School (USAFSOS), and at operational units (CONUS and OCONUS).

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute one-week-long indoctrination, continuing education, pre-deployment education, and issues-based instruction for SOF and SOF enabler students to cultivate region-specific knowledge of the AFRICOM Theater of operations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of which AFSOC units are deploying to the AFRICOM AOR.
  • Maintain knowledge of the missions of pertinent units through active liaison.
  • Produce lesson plans geared towards those missions and the political/military challenges.
  • Instruct students and select appropriate guest speakers to deliver instruction as necessary to best meet student needs.
  • Develop curriculum materials necessary to facilitate online/blended learning.
  • Ensure course conduct follows USAFSOS Instructional Systems Development (ISD) guidelines.
  • Manage the curriculum development/review process to ensure the course meets or exceeds the needs of SOF customers.

The T200 AFRICOM course focuses on U.S. strategic interests on the continent of Africa (excluding Egypt), emphasizing items of greatest interest to U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF) operating within the AFRICOM Area of Responsibility (AOR). The course addresses socio-economic, cultural, political, historical, and security dynamics influencing SOF operations in support of AFRICOM objectives and partnerships, with significant emphasis on interagency and international partnership objectives. It integrates intercultural communication and cultural intelligence topics to enhance partnership communication. The course dedicates significant time to operational perspective briefs by Special Operators with deployment or Joint Combined Exchange Training experience in Africa. Students explore subjects such as terrorist activities, transnational crime, and regional organizations across Africa’s five major regions. The course features resident faculty instructors and guest civilian/military subject-matter experts.

Requirements

  • At least a master’s degree with 18 undergraduate semester credit hours and 24 graduate semester hours directly related to the study of Africa in foreign area studies, country studies, international relations, international development, anthropology, history, sociology, political science, or a related academic discipline (Government approval required).
  • OR at least 2 years of recent (within the last 18 months) teaching experience and a master’s degree in a closely related field (Government approval required).
  • OR at least 3 years as a Combat Aviation Advisor or related experience (e.g., Special Forces) and a bachelor’s degree in any field. Waivers may be granted for significant relevant operational experience.
  • Official transcripts for each claimed college degree must be provided.
  • At least 2 years of experience teaching regional studies to military audiences.
  • Experience developing curricula and teaching materials related specifically to Africa for undergraduate and graduate-level courses.
  • At least 4 years (including at least 3 months within the last 2 years) of experience living in the target region on the local economy, engaged in work or studies (not in a U.S. compound).
  • OR at least 3 years as a Combat Aviation Advisor or related experience (e.g., Special Forces) and a bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • Combination of military experience, appropriate education, and teaching experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of a foreign language is not required but preferred if it enables the use of authentic materials in the target language.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred in political science, conflict management, military science, international relations, regional area study, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of active or reserve experience as a U.S. military member in a Special Operations Forces functional community (e.g., Combat Aviation Advisor, Combat Control Team, AFSOC career flier, Army Special Forces, or Civil Affairs).
  • Must possess or be eligible to obtain a SECRET clearance.
