About the role

Under general supervision, performs building cleaning, facilities and grounds maintenance work in schools and administrative buildings. This is the entry and general worker level in the building service staff positions. Employees receive on‑the‑job training in the application of simple manual skill and use of cleaning and grounds tools and equipment, and supplies to clean interior of buildings and maintain grounds. The position is located at Bel Pre Elementary School in Silver Spring (Building Services/Custodial, Job Grade 6).

Responsibilities

• Perform building cleaning and grounds maintenance
• Move or lift furniture and equipment (heavy work)
• Report to buildings during inclement weather as emergency personnel
• Assist staff at other locations in emergency situations
• Provide and maintain a current working telephone number for supervisor
• Wear provided uniform and proper attire
• Potential overtime or night work

Requirements

• Sufficient physical strength to lift and move objects of at least 50 lbs.
• Ability to perform manual labor and sustain physical effort
• Designated emergency personnel – must report during inclement weather and assist in emergencies
• Willingness to work overtime or night shifts as needed
• Maintain a current telephone number on file with supervisor
• Wear issued uniform and proper attire

Qualifications

• Completion of the ninth grade required
• High school or GED diploma preferred
• Experience in general cleaning of buildings and grounds (or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience)

Skills

• Knowledge of methods, materials, and practices of building and grounds work
• Ability to learn to operate and maintain custodial and grounds‑care equipment
• Ability to learn proper use of approved cleaning supplies and chemicals
