IDRH Scholars in Digital Humanities - Student Hourly

IDRH invites applications for the 2026-2027 cohort of IDRH Scholars in Digital Humanities. This program brings together a cohort of undergraduate students from across the university to work collaboratively on digital humanities projects, attend events, and learn digital methods.

About the Award

The IDRH Scholars program provides funding for undergraduate students at the University of Kansas to work with IDRH staff on Digital Humanities projects. The program has two main objectives:

• Give students the opportunity to learn about digital humanities.
• Recognize IDRH faculty for mentorship efforts and encourage them to mentor undergraduate students.

The award provides three positions offering 75 paid hours at $15/hour in the Fall semester, with the possibility of renewal for the Spring semester. At the end of the experience, mentors and scholars will give a public presentation.

About the Role

IDRH Scholars will contribute to digital humanities research projects led by faculty at the University of Kansas. This opportunity allows students to learn collaborative research skills and gain a better understanding of technical and ethical issues related to digital methods in humanities research. Open to KU undergraduate students for the Fall 2026 semester, with potential renewal in Spring 2027.

Responsibilities

• Assist with research (100% of duties).
• Learn to work with digital tools, such as Adobe Photoshop, ESRI ArcGIS, and Omeka.
• Collaborate with a supervisor to give a public presentation on the work at the end of the semester.

Schedule

Students will work approximately 5 hours per week during the Fall 2026 semester. A regular work schedule will be determined at the beginning of the semester, including regular check-ins with the supervisor and occasional attendance at team meetings.

Requirements

• Must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours during the semester of the appointment. For summer periods, students must meet one of the following:
  • Enrolled in no fewer than 6 hours in the past spring semester, or
  • Pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no fewer than 6 hours, or
  • Enrolled in summer session, or
  • Admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester.
• Must give a public presentation with mentors at the end of the experience.

Qualifications

Required

• Demonstrated interest in humanities research, as evidenced in application materials. This may include, but is not limited to, museum studies, history, anthropology, literary studies, geographic information systems, digital exhibits or archives, or web development.

Preferred

• Demonstrated ability to learn and work with new software tools and platforms, as evidenced by application materials.
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively, as evidenced by application materials.
• Professional experience in the application of digital methods to humanities research, as evidenced by application materials.

Pay

$15.00 per hour.

Additional Information

Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by unit leadership and HR. This is an hourly/non-exempt position, and a student employee cannot hold this position concurrently with a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA).
