About the role
This Educational Assistant position provides educational and classroom assistance under the guidance of teachers, principals, and other supervisors. The role supports instructional activities, promotes student safety and well-being, and reinforces classroom programs. Responsibilities include observing and documenting student progress, implementing instructional plans, and assisting students with special health needs.
Responsibilities
- Confers with teachers, supervisors, and colleagues to plan day-to-day routines, programs, and special projects.
- Performs program-related instructional, behavioral, and other activities, including assisting students with individualized educational plans (IEP, behavior, safety, etc.).
- Undertakes delegated instructional tasks for individuals and small groups; assists with classroom assignments and monitors student activities in the classroom and other locations.
- Performs instructional support tasks, including leveling prepared worksheets, organizing materials, creating and posting bulletin boards, collecting data, and monitoring student progress.
- Implements classroom, small group, and individual social and behavioral management interventions/systems.
- Manages personal student information according to federal and state laws and District policies, maintaining strict confidentiality.
- Helps maintain an orderly and attractive instructional area (e.g., prevents litter, puts up bulletin board displays, cleans blackboards, stores supplies, sets up study areas).
- Performs routine clerical work such as typing, photocopying, filing, record-keeping, and answering telephones.
- Responsible for assigned building and classroom supervision, including field trips, playground, lunch, hall, and bus duty, and on-bus supervision.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of all district policies and procedures.
- Ensures consistent, daily, and punctual attendance.
- Operates and troubleshoots office equipment, including telephones and photocopy machines.
- Moves classroom furniture and organizes classrooms to enhance student learning.
- Attends in-service trainings, staff meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
- Reports issues to the principal and appropriate authorities, including safety, sanitary and fire hazards, vandalism, thefts, and errant wildlife.
- Consistently follows all applicable federal and state laws and district policies, rules, and supervisor directions.
- Observes ergonomics of sedentary office work, including placement of computers and monitors, and sitting alignment.
- Observes proper lifting techniques and other strategies to avoid accidents and personal injury while performing job duties.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED is required. An Associate Degree or two years of study at a community college/university is preferred.
- Works well with others from diverse backgrounds, focusing on solving conflict, maintaining confidentiality, and contributing to a positive team spirit.
- Demonstrates the ability to remain calm and professional in an environment with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to communicate English fluently both verbally and in writing, including proficiency in spelling and grammar.
- Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff, regulatory agencies, vendors, and members of the community.
- Ability to read and interpret documents, including governmental regulations, safety rules, and operating/maintenance instructions.
- Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence with high degrees of accuracy and professionalism.
- Basic mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and the ability to calculate rates, ratios, percentages, and proportions.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in oral, written, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving multiple variables.
- Ability to effectively use office computers and internet access for email, research, word processing, database manipulation, visual presentations, and general web-based applications.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and work effectively in a dynamic environment.
- A valid First Aid Card is required.
- Must have or be able to obtain various certificates, licenses, and/or registrations as required by federal, state, or local law(s), including a valid Oregon Driver’s License.
Physical Expectations
- Regularly required to talk, see, or hear.
- Frequently required to walk, stand, sit, use fingers and hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and move around inside and outside of buildings.
- Occasionally required to push, pull, bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, and crouch.
- Must lift and/or move up to 35 lbs.
- May occasionally climb stairs or ladders.
- Must have, with or without vision correction, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
- Standard classroom setting with low to moderate noise levels, occasionally high depending on location, student population, and activities.
- Occasional supervision of children during arrival/departure and recess.
- Occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions and outdoor weather conditions, including seasonal heat and cold.
- May be exposed to contagious diseases, bodily fluids, and blood-borne pathogens.
Special Requirements
- Must provide proof of educational requirements, verify identity and employment authorization, and complete a pre-employment record check.
- Must be approved by the State Department of Education after a Fingerprint-Based Criminal History Verification.

$19.81 - $27.22/hour
