About the role

The Special Education Assistant I position provides educational and classroom assistance under the guidance of teachers, principals, vice principals, and other supervisors. This role assists in carrying out instructional activities, promoting student safety and well-being, and reinforcing classroom programs. The position specifically supports the supervision and instruction of students with special needs, observes and documents student progress, implements instructional plans, and assists students with health needs. Duties are performed under risk of infection and injury and involve working with students who have learning, developmental, and behavioral needs.

Responsibilities

  • Confers with teachers, supervisors, and colleagues to plan day-to-day routines, programs, and special projects, including student-specific delegated healthcare and special projects to assist in evaluating progress and/or implementing 504, behavior plans, and IEP objectives.
  • Performs program-related instructional, behavioral, and other activities, including helping students with individualized educational plans (IEP, behavior, safety, etc.).
  • Undertakes delegated instructional tasks for individuals and small groups; assists with classroom assignments and monitors student activities in the classroom and other locations.
  • Performs instructional support tasks, including preparing worksheets, organizing materials, creating and posting bulletin boards, collecting data, and monitoring student progress.
  • Implements classroom, small group, and individual social and behavioral management interventions/systems.
  • Manages personal student information according to federal and state laws and District policies, maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Helps maintain an orderly and attractive instructional area (e.g., prevents litter, puts up bulletin board displays, cleans blackboards, stores supplies, sets up study areas).
  • Performs routine clerical work such as typing, photocopying, filing, record-keeping, and answering telephones.
  • Responsible for assigned building and classroom supervision, including field trips, playground, lunch, hall, and bus duty, and on-bus supervision.
  • Assists students with physical education and other recreational activities.
  • With training, implements district and program-adopted crisis prevention/intervention strategies, including de-escalation procedures, physical interventions to avoid injuries, and other safety protocols.
  • Assists teachers and specialists in testing and assessing student skills; records and maintains accurate test and developmental data on student performance.
  • Provides student safety, self-care, health care, medical protocols, hygiene care, and mobility assistance services, which may include lifting, feeding, and toileting/diapering.
  • Maintains positive communication with school personnel, community agencies, and parents/guardians under the direction of teachers and specialists.
  • Implements prescribed physical therapy/medical assistance and support duties as directed and delegated by a healthcare professional.
  • Attends workshops and staff development classes to remain current on behavioral, medical, and data collection procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of all district policies and procedures.
  • Ensures consistent, daily, and punctual attendance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required; an Associate Degree or two years of study at a community college/university is preferred.
  • Works well with others from diverse backgrounds, focusing on solving conflict, maintaining confidentiality, and contributing to a positive team spirit.
  • Ability to communicate in English fluently, both verbally and in writing, including proficiency in spelling and grammar.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff, and others; ability to read and interpret documents such as regulations, safety rules, and instruction manuals.
  • Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence with accuracy and professionalism.
  • Basic mathematical skills, including the ability to calculate rates, ratios, percentages, and proportions.
  • Ability to use office computers and internet access for email, research, word processing, database manipulation, and general Office 365 applications (Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • A valid First Aid Card is required; must have or be able to obtain various certificates, licenses, and/or registrations as required by federal, state, or local law(s), including a valid Oregon Driver’s License.

Physical Expectations

  • Regularly required to talk, see, or hear; frequently required to walk, stand, sit, use fingers and hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and move around inside and outside of buildings.
  • Occasionally required to push, pull, bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, and crouch.
  • Must lift and/or move up to 35 lbs and occasionally more than 100 lbs; may occasionally climb stairs or ladders.
  • Must have, with or without vision correction, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must regularly use approved restraint and de-escalation procedures with students; occasionally move quickly and sometimes run to keep students safe and avoid injuries.
  • Must regularly lift students up to 35 pounds and lift, with assistance, students weighing up to 150 pounds.

Work Environment

  • Works in a special needs classroom setting and other activity/learning areas; noise level is usually low to moderate but occasionally high depending on location, student population, and activities.
  • Occasionally supervises students during arrival/departure and recess.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather conditions, seasonal heat and cold, contagious diseases, bodily fluids, blood-borne pathogens, moving parts of machinery, cleaning agents, hazardous chemicals, fumes, risk of electrical shock, and mechanical vibration.

Pay

$20.75 - $28.47 per hour, depending on experience.

Schedule

7.0 hours per day for 186 days per year.
