About the role

The Special Education Assistant I position provides educational and classroom assistance under the guidance of teachers, principals, vice principals and other supervisors. The role focuses on assisting with the supervision and instruction of students with special needs, observing and documenting student progress, implementing instructional plans, and assisting students with health needs. Duties are performed under risk of infection and injury and require work with students having learning, developmental and behavioral needs.

Responsibilities

  • Confer with teachers, supervisors and colleagues to plan day-to-day routines, programs, and special projects, including student-specific delegated healthcare and implementation of 504, behavior plans and IEP objectives.
  • Perform program-related instructional, behavioral and other activities, including helping students with individualized educational plans (IEP, behavior, safety, etc.).
  • Undertake delegated instructional tasks for individuals and small groups; assist with classroom assignments and monitoring student activities in the classroom and other locations.
  • Prepare worksheets, organize materials, create and post bulletin boards, collect data and monitor student progress.
  • Implement classroom, small group and individual social and behavioral management interventions/systems.
  • Maintain personal student information according to federal and state laws and District policies, ensuring strict confidentiality.
  • Maintain an orderly and attractive instructional area (e.g., prevent litter, put up bulletin board displays, clean chalkboards, store supplies, set up study areas).
  • Perform routine clerical work such as typing, photocopying, filing, record-keeping, and answering telephones.
  • Provide assigned building and classroom supervision including field trips, playground, lunch, hall, and bus duty and on-bus supervision.
  • Assist students with physical education and other recreational activities.
  • With training, implement district and program-adopted crisis prevention/intervention strategies, including de-escalation procedures, physical interventions to avoid injuries and other safety protocols.
  • Assist teachers and specialists in the testing and assessment of student skills; record and maintain accurate test and developmental data on student performance.
  • Provide student safety, self-care, health care, medical protocols, hygiene care, and mobility assistance services which may include lifting, feeding, and toileting/diapering.
  • Maintain positive communication with school personnel, community agencies, and parents/guardians under the direction of teachers and specialists.
  • Implement prescribed physical therapy/medical assistance and support duties as directed and delegated by a healthcare professional.
  • Attend workshops and staff development classes to remain current on behavioral, medical and data collection procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all district policies and procedures.
  • Ensure consistent, daily and punctual attendance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required. An Associate Degree or two years of study at a community college/university is preferred.
  • Ability to work well with others from diverse backgrounds, solve conflict, maintain confidentiality, listen actively, control emotions, remain open to others' ideas and contribute to building a positive team spirit.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in an environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Fluent English communication both verbally and in writing, including proficiency in spelling and grammar.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff, regulatory agencies, vendors and community members.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents including governmental regulations, safety rules and operating/maintenance instructions.
  • Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence with high degrees of accuracy and professionalism.
  • Mathematical proficiency including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate rates, ratios, percentages and proportions; ability to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Proficiency in using office computers and internet access for email, research, word processing, database manipulation, visual presentations and general web-based applications, including Office 365 (Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint and Outlook Express).
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • A valid First Aid Card is required.
  • Must have or be able to obtain various certificates, licenses and/or registrations as required by federal, state or local law(s), including a valid Oregon Driver's License.

Physical Expectations

When performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, see, or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, use fingers and hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms and move around inside and outside of buildings. The employee is occasionally required to push, pull, bend, stoop, crawl, kneel and crouch. The employee must lift and/or move up to 35 lbs. and occasionally more than 100 lbs. The employee may occasionally climb stairs or ladders. The employee must have, with or without vision correction, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must regularly use approved de-escalation procedures with students. The employee must occasionally move quickly and sometimes run to keep students safe and avoid injuries. The employee must regularly lift students up to 35 pounds and lift, with assistance, students weighing up to 150 pounds.

Special Requirements

The person selected for this position must be able to provide proof of educational requirements, verify identity and employment authorization, complete a pre-employment record check and be approved by the State Department of Education after having a Fingerprint-Based Criminal History Verification completed.
