HVAC Technician I

About the role

This journey-level position performs highly skilled maintenance, repair, and installation of industrial and commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, including:

• Control systems such as chillers, air conditioners, heat pumps, oil and gas fired boilers, furnaces, cooling towers, pumps, air handlers, exhaust air units, make-up air units, and duct air conveyance systems
• Variable air volume (VAV) systems, variable volume temperature systems, multi-zone units, electrical power and control circuits, time clocks, gas piping, fuel oil supply piping
• Fossil fuel burning devices, flue gas systems, condensate pumps and drain lines, fan coil units, condensing units, unit heaters, radiant and fan-forced heaters, hydronic heating and cooling systems
• Complex computer-operated Direct Digital Control (DDC) and pneumatic control systems

Responsibilities include determining proper HVAC system operation, troubleshooting malfunctions, calibrating and repairing equipment, and performing seasonal start-ups and shut-downs of related equipment. The incumbent is considered essential personnel and may be assigned anywhere in the county daily. A flexible working schedule is required, including call-back and on-call participation.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance, repair, and installation of HVAC systems and components
• Troubleshoot and diagnose system malfunctions
• Calibrate and repair HVAC equipment and control systems
• Carry out seasonal start-up and shut-down procedures for HVAC equipment
• Respond to call-back and on-call assignments as required

Requirements

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to:

• High school diploma or GED issued by a state department of education
• Two-year technical degree in air conditioning functions (heating, cooling, and ventilation) plus two years of progressively responsible HVAC experience or
• Completion of an apprentice-level vocational training program in air conditioning for a total of four years of progressively responsible HVAC experience

Qualifications

• Valid driver’s license
• Universal refrigerant recovery license
• Possession of a valid journeyman license from the state of Virginia within twelve months of appointment

The appointee will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and pre-employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current possession of a valid Virginia Journeyman’s HVAC License (or ability to obtain within 12 months)
• Commercial HVAC manufacturer-specific training/certifications
• 2+ years of HVAC field service experience
• Experience or working knowledge of Direct Digital Control (DDC), Pneumatic Controls Systems, Energy Management Systems (EMS), Building Automation Systems (BAS) (e.g., Trane Tracer)
• NATE (North American Technician Excellence) and/or HVAC Excellence Certifications
• Working knowledge of local, state, national mechanical, electrical, and building codes applicable to commercial HVAC systems
• OSHA 10/30 or other safety training certifications relevant to electrical/mechanical environments

Skills

• Ability to climb extension ladders and scaffolds up to 50 feet
• Ability to climb step ladders up to 16 feet
• Ability to stoop, bend, and work in tiring/uncomfortable conditions for extended periods
• Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs. with assistance (dolly, lift, or staff)
