This position may require temporary relocation to other TONHC facilities: Sells Hospital, Santa Rosa Health Center, San Simon Health Center, Casa Grande, and San Xavier Health Center.
About the Role
The position is located at TONHC, under the general supervision of the Facility Manager or Maintenance Supervisor, and requires on-call availability in a 24/7 operation.
Responsibilities
- Install, service, and repair new and existing environmental control systems in residences, office buildings, and commercial establishments.
- Inspect existing environmental control units, perform routine maintenance, and replace or repair equipment and parts, including Freon or other fluids.
- Mount compressor and condenser units on platforms or floors using hand tools and blueprints or engineering specifications.
- Inspect new heating and AC/cooling systems for conformity to building safety codes.
- Perform heating and cooling installations.
- Monitor chillers, pumps, boilers, and log all pressure and taps.
- Connect motors, compressors, temperature and humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and power sources.
- Install air and water filters in completed installations.
- Inject refrigerant into compressors to test systems; add Freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure.
- Observe pressure and vacuum gauges and adjust controls to ensure efficient operation.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure HVAC equipment runs smoothly and building systems operate efficiently.
- Test electrical circuits and components for continuity using electrical test equipment; replace defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, and fuses.
- Join tubing or pipe to refrigerating units using sleeves, couplings, unions, and solder joints with a torch to form complete refrigerant circuits.
- Install expansion and discharge valves in the circuit.
- Cut and bend tubing to correct length and shape using cutting and bending equipment.
- Comply with safety rules and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
- Maintain required reports and records.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending seminars, educational workshops, classes, and conferences.
- Contribute to team efforts and accomplish related results as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Three years of journeyman-level HVAC experience.
- Licensed Journeyman HVAC Technician or equivalent licensure.
- EPA Type II certification.
- Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check and National FBI fingerprint check are required.
- 39-month driving record check; must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
- Must meet Tohono O’odham Nation tribal employer’s insurance requirements to operate program vehicles if required.
- May be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O’odham language and English as a condition of employment.

- Knowledge of the Tohono O’odham culture, customs, and traditions.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and tribal laws, regulations, and requirements.
- Knowledge of current standards and safety codes for heating and cooling systems.
- Knowledge of OSHA and EPA rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of duct venting, heating, and cooling systems, CFR coolants, and gases.
- Knowledge of boiler systems, electrical systems, and their components.
- Skill in installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and testing heating and cooling systems.
- Skill in operating HVAC equipment and tools.
- Skill in basic math and using measuring instruments.
- Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
- Ability to coordinate assignments/tasks with other departments, programs, or construction trades.
- Ability to read and comprehend blueprints, schematics, diagrams, and sketches.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees and the public.
