HVAC Mechanic

About the Role

Primarily performs maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, servicing, and programming of Building Automation Systems (BAS), Commercial and Industrial Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration Systems (HVACR), exhaust fans, return fans, make-up air fans, commercial kitchen equipment, pneumatic and mechanical systems, electrical motors, belt and direct-driven motors of various sizes and horsepower. Supports energy sustainment efforts.

Responsibilities

• Understands and completes all required paperwork (time sheets, parts order forms, etc.).
• Performs trouble calls, corrective maintenance, and preventative maintenance within assigned timeframes.
• Works with limited or no supervision.
• Operates, maintains, and monitors BAS-building automation systems.
• Maintains, repairs, and operates all HVACR and commercial equipment/systems.
• Troubleshoots, repairs, programs, and maintains DDC, BAS, VFD sensors, and mechanical devices.
• Repairs and maintains critical refrigerated systems.
• Performs repair, testing, and maintenance for fire alarm and life safety systems.
• Repairs and maintains mechanical, electrical equipment, and miscellaneous electro-mechanical systems.
• Reads and interprets wiring diagrams/schematics to troubleshoot electrical components.
• Maintains cleanliness and appearance of assigned spaces and workshop.
• Assists the maintenance team and performs other duties as assigned.
• Ensures regular attendance to meet job requirements.

Requirements

• Knowledge of safety practices for working with hand and power tools.
• Experience with BAS, DDC, electrical, plumbing, HVACR, and safe operation/repairs.
• Familiarity with OSHA safety rules, Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA), and Lockout-Tagout (LOTO).
• Ability to safely perform tasks outlined in essential duties.
• Coordinates with staff to meet project deadlines.
• Reads and comprehends operations and maintenance manuals, schematics, blueprints, and shop drawings.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Troubleshoots systems using electronics, metering devices, bolometers, computers, and software.
• Identifies and resolves failures/alarms related to critical building equipment.
• Fabricates items using hand and power tools.
• Accurately estimates time and materials required for jobs.

Qualifications

• 3 years’ experience in a healthcare or similar regulated industrial setting as an HVAC Mechanic, with primary focus on BAS, DDC, and HVACR systems.
• Journeyman HVAC license or higher with EPA Universal Certification (CFC/ESCO or Institute Certification for HVAC or related accredited certification).
• Valid Driver’s License.

Preferred qualifications include completion of Mechanical Evaluation Certification for Hospital (MECH), an accredited apprenticeship program, and knowledge of NFPA, NEC, TJC, OSHA, and local, state, and federal codes.

Work Environment

• First shift: 6:00 AM–2:30 PM or 8:00 AM–4:30 PM.
• Work performed indoors and outdoors in varying climatic conditions.
• Required to wear protective clothing and devices when working with hazardous chemicals.
• Exposure to hazardous gases, high-pressure gases, hot liquids, dirt, dust, oil, and grease.
• Physical demands include standing, stooping, climbing, and lifting heavy objects.
• Must be able to work on ladders, scaffolds, platforms, roofs, and in cramped or confined spaces (e.g., ductwork, pits, crawl spaces).
• Lifting and carrying varies; equipment may be located up to 10–40 feet high.
• Ability to push 50 pounds (maintenance equipment) and lift a minimum of 50 pounds (supplies and equipment).
• Possible exposure to hazardous materials requiring use of respirators and personal protective equipment.

Pay

$26.07 per hour with an additional $5.09 for hazardous work (HW).
