About the role

The Heating, Ventilation & Air-Conditioning Mechanic maintains, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on refrigeration, air conditioning, water cooling equipment, boilers, HVAC systems, and associated physical plant equipment. This role ensures all systems remain fully operational and compliant with industry standards.

Responsibilities

• Provide all maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating, air conditioning systems, and related energy management systems.
• Operate, maintain, and repair air compressors, distribution lines, valves, and devices for air control.
• Operate, maintain, and repair pumps handling brines or other secondary refrigerating liquids, including all valves, appurtenances, and lines.
• Maintain proper operation during seasonal changes and recalibrate controls for energy-efficient operation.
• Operate, maintain, and repair heating systems and boiler control systems to meet manufacturer’s specifications.
• Diagnose repair needs and perform corrective measures, including mechanical, plumbing, and electrical functions.
• Maintain records for equipment and daily logs.
• Perform preventive maintenance, diagnosis, and repair on conventional air conditioning systems, freezers, refrigeration, and associated physical plant equipment.
• Maintain, repair, and replace thermostatic expansion and pressure-limited devices, valves, motors, compressors, starters, thermostats, piping, coils, boiler burners, and other HVAC system controls.
• Trace electrical circuits, install and repair time clocks and regulatory controls, and make minor repairs to electrical circuit breakers and motor controls.
• Perform related work such as balancing capacities and loads of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, estimating repairs, and ordering parts.
• Maintain building temperature during occupied hours to comply with ASHRAE Standard 55-2013, Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy.
• Adjust cooling, heating, reheating, preheating, and humidity to control environmental conditions.
• Maintain, diagnose, test, overhaul, install, and repair refrigeration, dehumidification, AC, ventilation, and heating systems.
• Mount compressor and condenser units using hand tools, following blueprints or engineering specifications.
• Fabricate, assemble, and install ductwork and chassis parts using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment.
• Replace filters, belts, and adjust temperatures for environmental control.
• Install evaporator units in chassis or air duct systems using hand tools.
• Cut and bend tubing to correct length and shape using cutting and bending equipment.
• Cut and thread pipe using machine or hand threading equipment.
• Join tubing or pipes to refrigerating units using sleeves, couplings, or unions, and solder joints using a torch.
• Install expansion and discharge valves in circuits.
• Connect motors, compressors, temperature/humidity controls, and ventilation fans to control panels and power sources.
• Install air and water filters in completed installations.
• Test joints and connections for gas leaks using leak testers and soap solution.
• Wrap pipes in insulation and secure them in place.
• Replace defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring.
• Observe pressure and vacuum gauges and adjust controls to ensure proper operation.
• Wear and use all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Ensure completed work orders are properly filled out and returned to work management.
• Support the project Safety Plan through personal involvement in all aspects of safety.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Possess a valid U.S. Driver’s license.
• Be deemed insurable under company policy.
• Successfully pass background and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum three (3) years of direct experience maintaining commercial and/or industrial refrigeration and HVAC equipment in a military or civilian workforce.

Skills

• Good organization and communication skills.
• Ability to deal with all levels of people, both inside and outside the company.
• Knowledge of various types of air conditioning equipment (split systems, wall A/C units, VAV systems, etc.).
• Skilled with pressure gauges, scales, recovery equipment, torch sets, brazing equipment, and materials.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Physical Demands

• Sufficient fine motor skill for use of computers and calculators, with the ability to withstand repetitive keyboarding for extended periods.
• Visual, auditory, and communication abilities sufficient to perform essential job functions.
• Ability to kneel, bend, and twist at the waist on an occasional basis.
• Ability to push, pull, carry, and lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds regularly and more on an occasional basis.
• Ability to travel by plane and safely operate a motor vehicle.
