About the Role

Performs maintenance and service repairs on heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. Installs new units or replacement parts for existing units according to specifications and established safety guidelines. Follows blueprints or engineering specifications to install units. Performs troubleshooting to identify the cause of problems. Maintains and secures a spare parts inventory. Recommends purchasing maintenance equipment and supplies as required to improve processes and efficiencies.

Typically requires an apprenticeship and/or completion of technical training. Requires a high school diploma. The regulations governing the location may require an HVAC Mechanical State License and EPA Section 608 Certification (CFC). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine corrective repairs and preventative maintenance to a variety of building heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) equipment under close supervision, including air handling units, chillers, heat pumps, boilers, pumps, exhaust fans, fan-coil units, variable air volume boxes, motors, air distribution machinery, pneumatic and digital controls, hot and chilled water distribution, and variable volume systems.
  • Performs seasonal transitions of systems to and from heating and cooling.
  • Performs basic repairs of HVACR systems and equipment.
  • Assists in major component replacement and systems repairs under the supervision of higher-level technicians.
  • Assists in executing HVACR system repair projects, such as the replacement of air handling units, chillers, or boilers, as well as emergency repair efforts.
  • May be required to serve in an on-call status and remain work-ready when scheduled for an on-call period or rotation.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED from a recognized State or Federal accredited organization or vocational training in HVACR with 1 year of experience.
  • Valid driver’s license to drive State vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate or technical degree from an accredited college or university or certification in HVAC field.
  • Experience with Johnson Controls Metasys.

Skills

  • Ability to use a building automation system, preference for Metasys.
  • Ability to provide good customer service.
  • Proficient with a computer and computer applications.
  • Ability to learn quickly and be flexible, adapting to changing work environments.
  • Knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration theories, principles, and systems operations.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance practices for HVACR systems.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering and architectural design documents.
  • Planning and organizing the most cost-effective use of materials, manpower, and equipment to safely perform daily assignments.
  • Effective communication in person, in meetings, on the phone, and via email.
  • Ability to memorize and recall details and transmit that information in verbal, written, or electronic communication.
  • Substantial manual dexterity, sense of touch, ability to see, ability to distinguish between colors, and ability to learn, retain, and recall work details.

Schedule

Days: Monday – Friday. May be required to serve in an on-call status and remain work-ready when scheduled for an on-call period or rotation.

Pay

Pay Band: 6

Salary Minimum: $18.85/hour

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
