About the Department

The Humanities Department at SJSU is a prominent center for creative, critical, interdisciplinary study and research. We offer three undergraduate degree programs: the Liberal Studies Teacher Preparation B.A.; the Creative Arts B.A.; and the Humanities B.A., in which students pursue a concentration in American Studies, Liberal Arts, or Comparative Religious Studies. The Department is also home to the Humanities Honors Program, featuring both lower and upper-division Humanities Honors GE course sequences.

San José State University is a teaching-centered institution and a national leader in graduating historically underserved students. SJSU has achieved both HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution) and AANAPISI (Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution) status. In all of our programs, we explore profound questions about what it means to be human, contextualizing those questions in time, place, and culture, as well as within educational institutions. We examine issues of conflict, injustice, inequality, beauty, meaning, and creative expression, while pushing the boundaries of humanistic studies into environmental and digital humanities. Liberal Studies Teacher Preparation majors build their training on a foundation of critical humanistic study to become K-8 teachers.

Responsibilities

• Teach a range of courses in the American Studies concentration of the Humanities BA, particularly the three lower-division core courses: AMS 10 Stories Make America, AMS 11 Visions of Democracy, and AMS 12 Introduction to US Popular Cultures.
• Opportunities to teach upper-division courses for Humanities: American Studies majors, such as AMS 169 American Dream and AMS 129 The U.S. in a Global Context. See the SJSU Course Catalogue for details and a full list of AMS courses.
• Hold regular office hours for students.
• Work cooperatively with other department faculty, staff, and the department chair.
• Participate in required course grading and assessment activities.
• Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a diverse student population—including age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation—through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
• Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
• Offer and meet all classes as scheduled throughout the semester or term, in the mode assigned (asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Requirements

• ABD (All but dissertation) or Ph.D. in American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Women’s/Gender Studies, Literature, History, Environmental Humanities, or a related discipline with a focus on environmental humanities and/or human-animal studies.
• Demonstrated strong college-level teaching skills and experience or potential to develop strong pedagogical skills.
• Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population, as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Interest in and record of scholarly activity.

Pay

Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience. Monthly salary ranges for full-time AY faculty are as follows (part-time rates are prorated):

• L-A / Range 2: $5,507 – $5,959
• L-B / Range 3: $6,221 – $7,481
• L-C / Range 4: $6,825 – $9,431
• L-D / Range 5: $8,593 – $10,347
