Qualifications
- High School degree or GED required
- Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in applicable field preferred
- Knowledge of meat industry is preferred
- Basic math skills
- Good people skills
- Self-motivated – work well without direct supervision
- Must be able to work with live hogs, follow and enforce humane handling guidelines
- Ability to follow instructions
Responsibilities
- Verify that all humane handling SOP's are being carried out, including scheduling, unloading, training, and handling of non-ambulatory animals
- Provide hands-on help with difficult hogs – both in the truck and the drive alleys
- Monitor/assist in slow hog movement and correct SOP coverage
- Periodically monitor activities and perform audits as needed; document deficiencies
- Maintain good communication with USDA/FSIS in matters related to humane handling
- Ensure that animals are being properly transported by monitoring equipment and seasonal preparation
- Assist in response to emergency situations
- Maintain implementation of the four elements of the Systematic Approach during each shift
- Participate on facility Animal Welfare Team
- Observe and assist transporters to verify that company procedures and USDA rules and regulations are being followed with respect to receiving and unloading hogs
- Attend scheduled and called meetings
- Perform various other duties as determined by the Livestock Handling Manager
