Qualifications

  • High School degree or GED required
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in applicable field preferred
  • Knowledge of meat industry is preferred
  • Basic math skills
  • Good people skills
  • Self-motivated – work well without direct supervision
  • Must be able to work with live hogs, follow and enforce humane handling guidelines
  • Ability to follow instructions

Responsibilities

  • Verify that all humane handling SOP's are being carried out, including scheduling, unloading, training, and handling of non-ambulatory animals
  • Provide hands-on help with difficult hogs – both in the truck and the drive alleys
  • Monitor/assist in slow hog movement and correct SOP coverage
  • Periodically monitor activities and perform audits as needed; document deficiencies
  • Maintain good communication with USDA/FSIS in matters related to humane handling
  • Ensure that animals are being properly transported by monitoring equipment and seasonal preparation
  • Assist in response to emergency situations
  • Maintain implementation of the four elements of the Systematic Approach during each shift
  • Participate on facility Animal Welfare Team
  • Observe and assist transporters to verify that company procedures and USDA rules and regulations are being followed with respect to receiving and unloading hogs
  • Attend scheduled and called meetings
  • Perform various other duties as determined by the Livestock Handling Manager
