About the Role

Our client is looking for a seasoned HR Specialist for a hands-on, HR-centric role covering the full employee lifecycle—compliance, employee relations, policy administration, and benefits support—with meaningful ownership of new hire onboarding, from offer acceptance through the first 90 days. Experience in construction, homebuilding, or a related trade industry is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

Core HR

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee relations issues, coaching managers and resolving concerns fairly and consistently.
  • Administer and interpret HR policies, ensuring consistent application across departments.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment law (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEOC, and OSHA requirements relevant to construction sites).
  • Support benefits administration—enrollment, changes, vendor coordination, and employee questions.
  • Own HRIS data integrity: employee records, status changes, org charts, and reporting.
  • Partner with leadership on performance management processes, disciplinary actions, and documentation.
  • Assist with compensation administration, job classifications, and pay equity reviews.
  • Help prepare for and support audits (workers' comp, EEO-1, unemployment claims, etc.).
  • Contribute to employee engagement initiatives, recognition programs, and culture-building efforts.

New Hire & Onboarding

  • Coordinate the full new hire cycle: offer letters, background checks, I-9/E-Verify, and pre-employment paperwork.
  • Own new hire onboarding and orientation, ensuring every new employee has a smooth, well-organized first day and first 90 days.
  • Partner with hiring managers on job postings, screening coordination, and interview scheduling as needed.
  • Maintain onboarding checklists, training assignments, and new hire documentation in the HRIS.
  • Serve as a resource for new employees navigating benefits, payroll setup, and company policy during their first weeks.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of progressive HR generalist/specialist experience.
  • Experience in construction, homebuilding, land development, or a related field strongly preferred.
  • PHR or SHRM-CP certification preferred.
  • Solid working knowledge of employment law and HR compliance requirements.
  • Experience with HRIS/payroll systems (e.g., Paycom, ADP, or similar) and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent judgment and discretion handling confidential employee information.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Clear, professional communication style—comfortable working directly with leadership and field teams.
