Responsibilities
- Mediate employee disputes, ensure proper documentation is followed, and corrective actions are implemented.
- Investigate allegations of harassment, discrimination, wrongful termination, improper conduct and other matters.
- Build strong, trusting relationships with all team members—from upper management to dishwashers - by being approachable, supportive, and regularly present at each bakery location.
- Serve as a go-to resource for employee questions, concerns, and support.
- Lead and coordinate culture-building initiatives that foster camaraderie and connection across all bakery locations—such as employee recognition programs, shoutouts, and engagement surveys.
- Support employee development by assisting managers and supervisors with performance reviews, development plans, progressive discipline, and constructive feedback processes.
- Maintain job description directory and update as needed.
- Ensure full compliance with labor laws, health and safety regulations, and internal HR policies at all locations.
- Support with staff onboarding, status changes, and offboarding procedures; ensuring compliant, timely processing of separations and terminations in accordance with California labor law.
- Manage leaves of absence in compliance with local, state, and federal laws and company policy, including payroll and benefits implications.
- Lead the interactive process for ADA accommodation requests.
- Maintain employee personnel files.
- Work with our benefits broker to provide expert-level knowledge and support regarding employee benefits and insurance, responding to all employee insurance-related questions confidently and accurately.
- Support with company-wide, yearly open enrollment.
- Administer worker’s compensation claims from start to end.
- Support staff with payroll, including hours tracking, time-off management, tip reporting, and wage adjustments.
- Support administration of payroll changes and creation of staff memos (salary/time adjustments, deductions, etc), including special withholding info (garnishments, 401k, etc).
- Support processing of payroll with payroll vendor per payroll schedule; updating payroll with employee contributions to 401k accounts and benefits enrollment to appropriate vendors.
- Maintain secure payroll company and staff adjustments files.
- Liaison to payroll company to address any questions, adjustments to staff payroll.
- Support in HR orientation for new staff members.
- Post and review job announcements, creating dashboards for the hiring committee to receive.
- Lead new hire paperwork processes.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in HR required, in related industry preferred.
- Demonstrated track record of establishing relationships and earning credibility and respect with employees.
- 1+ years of employee relations expertise.
- Expert knowledge of California and Federal labor laws.
- Responsibility: Ability to take responsibility and follow instructions effectively.
- Strong organizational and planning skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Must have reliable transportation for regular commuting between store locations.
- Good-to-have: Experience processing payroll preferred, Recruiting experience preferred, Payroll experience preferred, Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
