About the Role

AFS Group is seeking an experienced HR Generalist to own benefits administration and workers' compensation for approximately 500 employees across Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and Tennessee. This role serves as the dedicated point of contact for health and welfare benefits, leave of absence, short-term disability, FSA, and workers' comp claims. The position requires regular travel to company locations to support employees directly.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary administrator for all health and welfare benefits, including open enrollment, plan changes, and vendor coordination.
  • Manage the full leave of absence process, including FMLA tracking, documentation, and pay coordination.
  • Administer short-term disability (STD) claims and coordinate with carriers.
  • Own Flexible Spending Account (FSA) administration and employee elections.
  • Manage workers' compensation claims from first report of injury through resolution, coordinating with carriers, managers, and employees across all 5 states.
  • Support compliance efforts across the 5-state footprint (OH, KY, IN, IL, TN), including staying current on state-specific leave, benefits, and workers' comp requirements.
  • Partner with the VP of HR on drug testing program compliance and documentation as needed.
  • Travel regularly to AFS locations to support employees directly on benefits questions, claims, and enrollment.
  • Partner with the VP of HR to design and launch the company's first formal Rewards & Recognition program.
  • Serve as secondary backup on RFMS commission administration to ensure continuity of this function.

Requirements

  • 5–8 years of progressive HR generalist or benefits-focused HR experience.
  • Hands-on experience administering health and welfare benefits, FMLA/leave of absence, STD, and FSA programs.
  • Experience managing workers' compensation claims.
  • Comfort and willingness to travel regularly to multiple company locations (estimate: 25–40% travel).
  • Working knowledge of multi-state employment law, or demonstrated ability to learn it quickly.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working directly with employees on sensitive, personal matters.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ADP Workforce Now or a comparable HRIS platform.
  • PHR, SHRM-CP, or equivalent HR certification.
  • Prior experience in a lean HR department where generalist versatility is valued over narrow specialization.
  • Experience supporting or launching an employee recognition or engagement program.
