HSE Lead, Global Programs and Systems
About the Company
KoBold is transforming mineral exploration by building AI models and deploying them—alongside novel sensors—to guide decisions on KoBold-owned-and-operated exploration programs. The mining industry has struggled to find new ore deposits, requiring over 10 times more capital for discoveries than 30 years ago. With easy-to-find, near-surface deposits largely exhausted and chronic under-investment in exploration technology, KoBold addresses accelerating demand for copper, lithium, and other metals critical to electric vehicles, renewable energy, and data centers.
In six years, KoBold has become the largest independent mineral exploration company and the largest exploration technology developer. Our team of data scientists and software engineers—many from leading technology companies—collaborate with renowned exploration geologists to lead programs. KoBold has already proven its first discovery with significantly less capital than the industry average and identified one of the best copper deposits ever discovered, with concentrations far above the global average. This asset alone is expected to generate meaningful revenue for decades. KoBold’s portfolio includes over 60 other projects, each with potential for high-quality discoveries.
KoBold is privately held, backed by investors including T. Rowe Price, Canada Pension Plan Investments, Andreessen Horowitz, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, BOND Capital, Durable Capital, StepStone, Standard Investments, Equinor, BHP, and Mitsubishi.
About the Role
KoBold operates exploration programs across Africa, North America, Europe, and Australia, scaling faster than any independent explorer in the industry. As HSE Lead, Programs and Systems, you will design and own the HSE management system, digital tooling, and training infrastructure that ensure safety across every jurisdiction we operate in. You will build the systems, standards, and software that empower safety ownership at the field level. If you’ve ever wanted to rebuild a company’s HSE stack with modern tools, AI-native workflows, adequate resourcing, and strong executive support, this role is that opportunity.
Responsibilities
- Own the KoBold HSE Management System end-to-end, including architecture, document hierarchy, review frequency, and continuous improvement aligned to ISO 45001.
- Own KoBold’s digital HSE stack, including DATS, Forwood, and other platforms. Lead vendor evaluation, workflow configuration, integrations, and administration.
- Design HSE analytics that field teams actually use, including leading and lagging indicators, real-time dashboards, and communications that surface risk before it becomes an incident.
- Own KoBold’s AI in HSE strategy. Identify high-leverage applications that optimize or replace existing software tools, facilitate risk assessment, critical risk verification, observations, and inspections.
- Own the global document library for all HSE standards, programs, and operating procedures.
- Own the global training strategy and Learning Management System, including role-based curriculum, certification tracking, compliance reporting, competency verification, and content building.
- Design cultural initiatives that engage field crews and contractors, such as recognition programs, campaigns, safety moments, and leading indicator storytelling.
- Partner with regional HSE Managers and Field Operations leaders. You provide the platform, standards, data, and analytics; they deliver in the field.
- Directly support HSE for field campaigns, requiring intermittent travel to field projects globally.
Requirements
- Five or more years in HSE with meaningful experience owning or administering enterprise HSE software (e.g., DATS, Intelex, Cority, Enablon, Sphera, VelocityEHS, or comparable).
- Demonstrated experience building or materially improving an HSE management system aligned to ISO 45001, ANSI Z10, or an equivalent framework.
- Track record designing HSE training programs and administering a Learning Management System.
- Comfort working across multiple jurisdictions and regulatory regimes.
- Strong written communication skills. This role produces the standards others follow.
- Ability to lead through influence, driving change across regional operations, field teams, and executive stakeholders without direct authority.
- Proficiency with document control platforms and modern collaboration tools such as SharePoint, Confluence, and Google Workspace.
- Ability to travel to remote exploration sites and pass site-specific medical fitness screening when required.
Nice to Have
- Experience in mining, exploration, oil and gas, construction, or another high-risk industry.
- ISO 45001 Lead Auditor, CSP, CIH, ASP, or NEBOSH Diploma certification.
- Experience using AI or LLM tooling to build HSE workflows (e.g., document search, incident triage, content generation).
- BI and analytics experience with leading and lagging indicators (Power BI, Tableau, or SQL).
- Multi-country experience, especially in Africa or emerging markets.
- Prior experience transitioning from a third-party HSE provider to in-house capability.
- Familiarity with low-code or scripting tools (Retool, Airtable, Python) for building lightweight HSE tools.
Pay
Base salary range: $125,000 to $170,000 USD, depending on experience and location. Total compensation also includes equity and a comprehensive benefits package.
Benefits
- Health, dental, and vision coverage.
- Retirement benefits.
- Paid time off and parental leave.
- Home office stipend.
Schedule
Remote, based in North America. Expect roughly 10 to 15 percent travel to KoBold sites globally, weighted toward the first 12 months as you establish standards and build relationships.
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States or Canada.
