About the Role

The Benefits/Leave of Absence (LOA) Specialist reports to the North America Associate Service Center (NAASC) Total Rewards Benefits Manager. This role is responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating the service delivery of Total Rewards Benefits Administration programs to ensure a positive customer experience. The specialist will develop in-depth knowledge of BD’s Health & Welfare (H&W) and LOA programs and policies (U.S. and Canada), serving as a subject-matter expert in their administration. The position supports the Customer Interaction Center (CIC) or Tier 1 in call script development and Tier 2 inquiries, while partnering cross-functionally with Program Centers of Excellence (CoEs) for H&W and LOA.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal/external resources to administer the Company’s Health & Welfare and Leave of Absence programs.
  • Work directly with outside vendors on daily transactions, special projects, and issue resolution.
  • Document and maintain key processes, procedures, and guides for benefits plan administration.
  • Support internal requests for audit data to ensure program compliance and control requirements.
  • Maintain summary plan descriptions, presentations, participant guides, and employee benefit communications for call scripts.
  • Serve as the subject-matter expert for H&W and LOA programs, policies, and processes to resolve issues.
  • Manage vendor partnerships, including operational meetings, compliance with plan documents/regulations, SLAs, and contract agreements.
  • Lead the implementation of Annual Enrollment benefits.
  • Coordinate benefits-related activities with external vendors, including premium payments, data verification, beneficiary forms, address searches, court orders, and reconciliations.
  • Support BD Healthy Lives program activities and the tuition reimbursement process.
  • Act as a subject-matter expert for associate Leave of Absence policies, including Corporate Disability Policies, Federal FMLA, Military Leave, STD/LTD, OSHA reporting, State FLA, HIPAA, USERRA, and other U.S./Canada LOA legislation.
  • Identify and recommend process improvements to simplify and enhance program delivery.
  • Lead or participate in continuous improvement initiatives to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Provide Tier 2 technical support and guidance to CIC Tier 1 on Benefits Administration programs.
  • Partner with Benefits Administration CoEs to define and implement program delivery, acting in a consultative and project management role.
  • Research and resolve escalations from employees, managers, and HR business partners via case management tools.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Benefits Program (H&W and LOA) administration, preferably in a mid/large global organization.
  • HR Generalist experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of retirement program administration and compliance.
  • Familiarity with IRS, ERISA, HIPAA, ACA, FMLA, ADAAA, and DOL regulations.
  • Proficient in end-to-end H&W and LOA processing.
  • Experience with Workday and SAP is desirable.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to compose routine written communications independently.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in HR/Business Administration or equivalent experience.
  • Certifications preferred: Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), Certified Benefits Professional (CBP), Professional in Human Resources (PHR/SPHR), or Six Sigma/Lean Management.
  • Expert proficiency in English; additional language (e.g., Spanish) preferred.
