The Opportunity
As our first in-house HR Manager, you will build, own, and design the human resources function from scratch for a hyper-growth organization. Working alongside our Employee Success team, you will professionalize multi-state operations to protect a rapidly expanding distributed workforce. This is a hands-on builder role where your systems architecture will directly safeguard thousands of team members.
Responsibilities
- Translate an in-flight HR audit into a comprehensive, scalable HR playbook with clear processes and documentation.
- Manage core HR operations and compliance for US employees and international contractors, ensuring strict adherence to localized labor laws.
- Standardize onboarding and offboarding workflows by role and location, streamlining new hire paperwork and state registrations.
- Own the Employee Handbook and core HR policies, balancing legal minimums with proactive risk reduction to guide leadership.
- Serve as the primary HR contact for remote, multi-state employee issues, utilizing sound judgment to resolve complex personal situations.
- Oversee HR data integrity and centralize records within the HRIS to eliminate scattered documentation.
- Build a central HR operations manual complete with SOPs, checklists, and video guides to ensure seamless future department scaling.
Requirements
- 5–8+ years of hands-on HR generalist experience specifically within small business or startup environments.
- Proven experience owning human resources operations for a fully remote, multi-state US workforce.
- Mandatory hands-on experience supporting labor law compliance and employee relations within the state of California.
- Strong background in federal, state, and local HR compliance and building operational workflows from the ground up.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain legal risks in plain English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting HR compliance in Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, or Pennsylvania.
- HR leadership background in fast-paced B2B services, agency, or high-volume outbound environments.
- Prior experience utilizing AI tools to research employment laws, draft policies, and verify compliance documentation.
Pay
Target base salary between $110,000 and $140,000 USD, depending on experience and location.
