About the Role

Under the supervision of the Executive Director of HRL, this position serves as the Housing Safety and Compliance Coordinator for Housing and Residential Life. The role is responsible for monitoring and assessing hazardous and unsafe situations, developing safety measures, and ensuring compliance with chemical, mechanical, electrical, environmental, and bio-safety regulations. The incumbent provides training to HRL Facilities staff, tracks attendance, and follows up with non-attendees. This position also delivers equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive services to enhance campus life, using a student-centered and equity-minded approach in all communications.

Responsibilities

  • Review, revise, rewrite, and create Standard Operating Procedures related to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).
  • Develop safety-related policies, programs, and standard operating procedures, including "if-then" scenarios. Review and update existing policies to ensure compliance with legislation.
  • Conduct inspections and safety reviews: investigate and document incidents, write reports, and develop solutions to prevent recurrence. Investigate near-miss events.
  • Take corrective action on facility-related health and safety issues (e.g., leaks, odors, unsafe equipment, lack of machine guards, compliance issues).
  • Meet with supervisors to assess future safety and facility needs and provide training as required.
  • Develop and deliver general, remedial, or specialized safety training to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Coordinate Emergency Evacuation Drills for Residence Hall Communities.
  • Provide Safety Data Sheets and related information upon request.

Requirements

  • Thorough understanding of State and Federal safety and environmental health laws, codes, and CSULB policies.
  • Ability to manage hazardous materials and waste while supporting teaching and research activities in full compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Experience planning and conducting complex health hazard investigations, analyzing situations, and taking effective action.
  • Ability to evaluate current regulations and recommend program changes.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for engaging with individuals and groups.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a highly diverse population to enhance program effectiveness and foster cooperation.
  • Ability to multitask efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • General knowledge of utilities and facility-related issues.
  • Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines, including safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies.
  • Commitment to contributing to a positive university experience for students and supporting the university’s vision of excellence.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience.
  • A minimum of three years of progressively responsible professional experience in safety and regulatory compliance in a comparable setting; five years is preferred.

Schedule

  • 1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.
  • This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

Pay

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,877 (Step 1) - $8,561 (Step 20) per month.

To be eligible for full benefits, employees must be appointed at least half-time (.50 FTE) with an appointment lasting more than six months and one day.
