About the Role

Under general supervision, the Housekeeper is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of assigned schools and facilities, conducting a wide variety of housekeeping duties to support a safe, productive, and positive learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Supports and upholds the mission, vision, and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
  • Interacts, communicates, and collaborates effectively with all stakeholders.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all employee and student information.
  • Participates in professional meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Requests and maintains materials needed for daily responsibilities; ensures safe storage and proper use of tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Cleans assigned schools and facilities according to schedule, including:
    • Cleaning rooms, restrooms, and replenishing soap and paper supplies.
    • Cleaning water fountains, mopping, waxing, sweeping, and vacuuming floors and walkways.
    • Washing windows and blinds, dusting, and cleaning staircases.
    • Cleaning assigned cafeteria areas and teachers' lounges.
  • Completes district-wide asbestos awareness training and participates in local facility asbestos awareness activities.
  • Empties garbage and trash containers regularly and keeps containers clean and sanitary.
  • Performs light yard work and assists with building and grounds maintenance, including outside cleaning such as sweeping walkways and picking up trash.
  • Knows locations of all electrical, gas, and water cut-off points in assigned areas.
  • Assists with preparing classrooms for closing and building shutdowns as directed.
  • Utilizes effective energy practices, such as turning off lights in unoccupied spaces.
  • Posts warnings/signs for wet floors, wet paint, or off-limit areas.
  • Operates housekeeping equipment and tools, including vacuum cleaners, mops, brooms, buffers, and hand tools.
  • Mixes and applies chemicals and cleaning agents properly; attends Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and chemical use safety training.
  • Wears required protective equipment, such as safety goggles, gloves, non-slip shoes, and other gear based on assigned tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent; or any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Prior experience cleaning and maintaining buildings preferred.
  • Must have current government-issued identification.
  • Must be able to access reliable transportation.
  • Knowledge of district policies, procedures, and operations related to the role.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation, and utilization of equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy and work without direct supervision.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, students, and the public.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent physical exertion required to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds; mechanical devices should be used for objects over 50 pounds.
  • Regularly required to push/pull items such as furniture or boxes of materials.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, listen, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Specific vision abilities include close and distance vision.
  • Occasional requirement to work irregular or extended hours.
  • Frequent use of a computer monitor and related equipment.

Working Conditions

  • Work is conducted primarily indoors with no significant exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
  • Noise level varies from quiet to loud depending on activity.
  • Frequent contact with strong cleaning agents.
  • No travel is required.

Schedule

8 hours per day, 190 days per school year (full-time during the school year). Conditions of employment are adjusted for part-time employees or those hired for less than an entire school year.

Pay

Support Staff Salary Schedule (Grade 6).
