About the role

You’ll lead the heart of a welcoming retirement development of 63 homes for residents aged 55 and over, right in Lancaster city centre with the canal and amenities close by. Life here centres around a friendly lounge, well-kept landscaped gardens, a convenient laundry room and a comfortable guest suite. As the on-site House Manager, you’ll be a reassuring presence, fostering a safe, supportive and sociable environment where residents feel listened to, independent and at home.

Responsibilities

You will be the go-to point of contact for residents, visitors and contractors, ensuring the building is safe, well-run and warmly welcoming. Most days you’ll balance front-of-house support with practical checks, maintenance coordination and clear communication, keeping everything running smoothly and residents well informed.

What Success Looks Like

  • Communication is clear and timely, from noticeboards to resident updates and contractor briefings.
  • Routine checks, testing and inspections are completed on schedule, with actions followed through.
  • Community life thrives through small, thoughtful touches that encourage connection and independence.
  • Issues are anticipated and resolved early, minimising disruption and enhancing peace of mind.

How You'll Spend Most Of Your Time

  • Welcoming residents and visitors, responding to day-to-day queries and offering practical support.
  • Carrying out regular building, safety and compliance checks, logging actions and maintaining records.
  • Coordinating cleaning, repairs and maintenance with contractors, monitoring standards and access.
  • Managing deliveries, keys, noticeboards and guest suite bookings with tidy, organised systems.
  • Keeping communal areas presentable, reporting defects and following up to resolution.
  • Communicating updates and arranging access for works, ensuring everyone knows what to expect.

  • You’re organised and proactive, with a keen eye for detail and pride in high standards.
  • You stay calm under pressure and solve problems with a practical, hands-on approach.
  • You communicate clearly, both in person and in writing, and build positive relationships.
  • You’re comfortable working independently, making sound decisions and knowing when to escalate.

Experience That Helps

  • Experience in a customer-facing role within housing, hospitality, retirement living or front-of-house.
  • Familiarity with building safety routines, compliance checks or basic facilities coordination.
  • Handling contractor visits, scheduling small works and monitoring service quality.
  • Recording information accurately, keeping logs and using basic IT systems and email.
  • Supporting older or vulnerable people with sensitivity and discretion.
