Hourly Lab Specialist - Pharmacology and Toxicology

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine, a premier academic medical center in Richmond, is seeking a motivated individual to join the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. About the role

This position supports NIH-funded research focused on developing novel medications to treat Substance Use Disorders (SUDs). Responsibilities include daily care and handling of laboratory animals, drug administration, behavioral testing, data recording, and laboratory maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Animal handling and health assessment
  • Administer drug treatments to subjects
  • Utilize computer systems to initiate and perform behavioral testing (e.g., IV drug self-administration, behavioral activity/observation scoring)
  • Routine laboratory maintenance and cleaning
  • Monitor supply levels and rotate stock
  • Assist with surgical procedures, including preparing instrument packs, anesthetizing, and preparing subjects for surgery
  • Accurately record, update, and maintain daily experimental data
  • Prepare drug solutions and manage IV lines using sterile technique

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 1 year of lab experience (may include student experience)
  • Dependability and attention to detail
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with supervisors and laboratory personnel
  • Commitment to fostering an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility

Qualifications

Preferred:

  • Comfort working with animals, particularly laboratory rodents
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, life science, or a biomedical science-related field

Pay

$20 per hour

Schedule

Up to 29 hours per week, fully onsite
