Job/Department Summary

Working under the supervision of a physician laboratory director or higher-level Clinical Laboratory Scientist, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist I (CLS I) is a licensed professional responsible for performing a wide variety of moderate to highly complex clinical laboratory tests and examinations.

The CLS I provides medical staff with essential laboratory data for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and disease within the university setting. Assignments typically include diagnostic testing ordered by licensed practitioners (e.g., urinalysis, pregnancy tests, blood tests, antibiotic sensitivity tests), specimen collection and preparation, interpretation of test outcomes, calibration and maintenance of equipment, and quality assurance in compliance with state and federal regulations, including the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent, as defined by the California Division of Laboratory Science.
  • Equivalent post-secondary education, training, and experience may be accepted.

Licenses / Certifications

  • Valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license (required).

CSU Classification Salary Range

  • $32.01 - $46.63 per hour.

Additional Information

  • This position is considered a sensitive position based on CSU guidelines. Incumbent is responsible for the safety and security of Level 1 data, sometimes also referred to as Level 1 protected data.
  • The duties of this position will include participation in a decision that may have a material/financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, this is a “designated position” under the California State University’s Conflict of Interest Code and the incumbent will be required to file a Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest and is subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.
