Laboratory Technician (Hourly) - Cellular, Molecular and Genetic Medicine

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine is a premier academic medical center located in the heart of Richmond. The School of Medicine is internationally recognized for patient care and education, accounting for almost half of VCU’s sponsored research.

The Department of Cellular, Molecular and Genetic Medicine is dedicated to unraveling the fundamental biology that supports health and drives disease. Our faculty, trainees and students tackle some of the most pressing challenges in biomedical science, from the molecular and genetic roots of disease to the complexities of whole-body physiology.

Responsibilities

• Work independently performing assays such as cell culture; plasmid and siRNA transfection; plasmid purification; DNA damage assessments, e.g., Comet assays; flow cytometry; and assessments of cell viability
• Work closely with the PI to plan future studies
• Independent work exhibiting a high level of executive decision making
• Assist the PI with writing manuscripts and grant applications
• Teach and train graduate students
• Order supplies including mice
• Certification of the cell culture hood and maintenance of the lab’s BioRaft inventory
• Work harmoniously with the directors of core facilities to obtain access
• Keep the laboratory environment clean and orderly including benches, refrigerators and freezers

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent experience required, at least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience. Willingness and ability to learn new experimental techniques, with proper training and supervision by PI, then being able to carry out these experiments satisfactorily and in a timely manner. Employee must have ability to think on his/her own and detect potential problems during the course of experiments, so that he/she can discuss and troubleshoot with supervisor.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's in biology or a biomedical science.

Pay

Salary Range: $28/hr

Schedule

Up to 29 hours per week. This is a restricted position with no set end date; continued employment is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance.
