Hourly ASL Interpreter (Continuous)
About the role
The Interpreter I and Interpreter II positions at CSUN provide interpreting services to facilitate communication in various educational settings. The roles require a combination of voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice interpreting skills, with the Interpreter II handling more complex assignments.
Responsibilities
- Provide interpreting services in classroom and related instruction settings.
- Interpret technical or specialized subject matter and vocabulary, adapting terminology and instruction to ensure accessibility for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students.
- Perform more complex assignments requiring rapid switching between spoken English and sign language or manual sign system.
- Interpret in high-level discussions and complex topics, ensuring accurate and fluent translation.
- Adapt to diverse language preferences and assist in accommodating consumer requests.
Requirements
- Interpreter I: Experience in voice-to-sign interpreting or transliterating, with three years preferred. Must possess and maintain certification in CI, CT, NIC, or NAD.
- Interpreter II A/B: Two years of paid interpreting experience, with three years or 1800 hours preferred. Wide acquaintance with academic higher education system through college or university attendance or graduation is desirable.
Qualifications
- Interpreter I: Three years of experience preferred.
- Interpreter II A/B: Three years or 1800 hours preferred.
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of methods and techniques for communicating with deaf/hard of hearing persons.
- Ability to hear spoken language communication and use American Sign Language or other sign systems.
- Ability to vocally express for deaf/hard of hearing signers and interpret or transliterate for groups of hearing and deaf/hard of hearing persons.
Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule
The anticipated hiring range for Interpreter I is $32.28 - $41.29 per hour, and for Interpreter II A/B is $48.59 - $59.17 per hour. The salary range is $19.37 - $194.60 per hour. Hours are intermittent, on-call, and vary. The position is temporary, renewable, and subject to annual renewal based on organizational needs. The individual hired will work on-campus in Northridge, and this is not a telecommute position.
