About the role
The Interpreter I and Interpreter II positions at CSUN provide interpreting services to facilitate communication in various educational settings. The Interpreter I works in classroom or related instruction settings, while the Interpreter II handles more complex assignments, including advanced classes and interactive discussions.
Responsibilities
- Interpreting services in classroom or related instruction settings
- Performing more complex assignments requiring a combination of higher levels of training, skills, certification, and experience
- Adapting terminology, language, instruction, concept, theory, and emotion to convey all aspects of the lecture, teaching material, and experiences
- Relaying specialized vocabulary, ideas, or concepts to Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing students
Requirements
- Interpreter I: Experience and training in voice-to-sign to voice interpreting or transliterating, three years preferred
- Interpreter II: Two years of paid interpreting experience, three years or 1800 hours preferred
Qualifications
- Interpreter I: Certification in Interpreter Certificate, Transliterator Certificate, Comprehensive Skills Certificate, or Oral Transliterator Certificate
- Interpreter II: Certification in RID, NAD, and/or BEI
Skills
- Knowledge of methods and techniques used in communicating with deaf/hard of hearing persons
- Ability and specialized skills to hear spoken language communication, use American Sign Language or other sign systems, interpret spoken English at a rate appropriate to the assignment, and voice for deaf/hard of hearing signers

Pay
- Interpreter I: $30.74 - $39.32 per hour, dependent upon qualifications and experience
- Interpreter II A/B: $46.28 - $56.35 per hour, dependent upon qualifications and experience
Schedule
The position is intermittent, on-call, with varying hours and schedules.
