About the role

Under the direction of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, the Respiratory Therapist (RT) works with physicians, nurses, and other health team members to deliver medication, promote bronchial hygiene, manage mechanical ventilators, and monitor patient oxygenation status.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patients and recommend respiratory therapy treatments with identification of expected outcomes; assist in developing the plan of care based on diagnoses or issues.
  • Plan, prepare, and administer respiratory therapy treatments including PEP Therapy, aerosol therapy, chest physical therapy, incentive spirometry, and sputum inductions.
  • Perform arterial blood gas (ABG) puncture draw from arterial and central venous lines, and analysis.
  • Perform advanced respiratory care modalities including high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide administration, and difficult intubation procedures.
  • Care for patients receiving mechanical ventilation, including ventilator setup, management of complicated patients, weaning and discontinuation, and troubleshooting.
  • Educate patients and families about illnesses and provide information about community support groups and available programs.
  • Perform diagnostic pulmonary and cardiac tests.
  • Provide accurate medication and dosage to the correct patient as prescribed.
  • Record patient treatment, response, and progress in a timely manner.
  • Respond to Code Blue and Rapid Response calls; assist by maintaining the patient's airway and performing CPR.
  • Role model proactive problem-solving by collaborating with staff to resolve identified issues.
  • Utilize the chain of command for unresolved or escalating issues; advocate for patients and staff to ensure safe care delivery and environment.
  • Report events through the Event Reporting System.
  • Actively participate in and support quality assurance and improvement programs.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy.
  • RCP and RRT certification/licensure.
  • Minimum six (6) months of Respiratory Therapist experience within a hospital setting.

  • Knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span; ability to assess data reflective of patient requirements relative to population-specific and age-specific needs.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Effectiveness as a group leader and participant.
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple members of the healthcare and administrative leadership team.
  • Contribute to initiatives and processes while supporting a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows.
  • Excellent assessment, clinical, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate work within schedule constraints and handle emergent requirements in a timely manner.
  • Provide accurate medication and dosage to the correct patient as prescribed.
  • Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills; ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to critically think and problem-solve for clinical patient issues.
  • Competent at ventilator management.
